Miles and miles of stretched land separates Miltreeve from Caiwood.
Although both of those places had been most familiar to me, i can't seem to familiarize the hundred miles dividing them from each other.
"Where are we now?" I ask Jake whilst staring out of the window, admiring the breath-taking view. Its almost noon time, but the sun still can't steal the spot light from the bits of snowflakes.
Leafless trees, frozen lamp posts, snow-covered walkways and almost empty streets. The typical winter scenario.
"We'll stop by for lunch, where do you want?" He asks and I pout because he didn't answer my question.
"We'll just gas up first." He lastly says before pulling up to a gasoline shop.
The girl that wore the shop uniform, who's currently leaning at one of the posts stood up upon seeing customers.
Jake rolls down the window and the girl seemed fazed, she batted her eyelashes for way too many times that you could lose count at one.
And she didn't stop flirting with jake until we are all gas-ed up. And let me tell you how annoying it was.
Jake got in the car and buckles his seat belt.
I cleared my throat before speaking. "We can go to a drive-through, so it wouldn't take too long." I point out. "Besides, i'm not hungry. And you're never hungry." I chuckle.
"Wait, did i just heard what i just heard? Is Harper Henson really not hungry? Tell me, is it the end of the world?"
"I'm not hungry." I repeat.
"Why?" He asks. "I'm just not." I answer.
"Are you sure?"
Oh, how i love to slap off the teasing smirk from his face.
"Yes, i'm a hundred percent sure."
"Okay then. I'm not hungry at all and if you say so yourself that you, too, aren't hungry then let's not waste time, money and energy to buy some indulging food." He says whilst scooting his head closer to me but keeping his eyes on the road, obviously for safety reasons. His tone, by the way, sounds a lot like challenging me into it.
I squint my eyes and study him before answering. "Then let's not." - i compete at his tone.
"Okay, fine, i take it back! I am hungry! And i need food or else the stake of me dying in the next couple of hours will increase! Please, Jake." I plead, clutching my tummy for exaggeration.
"That took a while, longer than what i've anticipated. I actually thought you would say that a minute earlier." He laughs.
"Now, now, slow the car. McDonald's ahead, it might be the last fast food chain we'll see for the next hours." I pat his shoulder.
"Yes, Miss." He salutes with his free hand and i gulped hard, remembering the first day we met. He said the exact same words and did the exact same thing.
He smiles at me before slowing down and took a left turn to the McDonald's drivethrough.
"Welcome to McDonald's sir, can i take your order?" A boy with a McDonald's hat greets through an open glass window pane.
I'll admit, i was happy that a boy was on shift since i don't want another session of seeing another girl flirting with Jake. Honestly, Jake is handsome but not that handsome. Maybe its his charm that attracts girls like a magnet most.
"I'll have the regular McFlurry." Jake turns to me for my orders.
"And i'll have large fries, cheeseburger and a regular McFlurry." I say. I actually hesitated to just order a happy meal since i'm way too old for it, and it's gonna be embarassing.
"No happy meals?" He asks, confused.
"Puh-lease, Happy Meals are for kids." I snort, before fakely engulfing in a hysterical laugh. Owing serious looks from Jake and McBoy. (Yes, i came up with a nickname and it is 'McBoy' for the drive through guy.)
I stopped laughing and i sigh. "And a happy meal." I gave up.
"That's my girl."
My heart halts and beats faster than the speed of light.
Very accurate there Harper, very acurrate.
I play with my seatbelt and wait for McBoy to give our orders.
I feel something itch on my face and i pull out the vanity mirror.
It seems like the part that is itchy had turned a light shade of tomato red.
I caught Jake looking at me through the mirror and i raise an eyebrow at him. He hurriedly turn away and i laugh.
"What's so funny?" He asks.
"N-nothing." I say in the verge of tears for laughing so hard.
I don't even know why i am laughing, maybe it was because of the nervous look on his face when i caught him.
"Yeah. 'cos laughing- in better words: cackling- that hard over nothing is possible now?" He shake his head, unsatisfied with my answer but he let it down anyway.
"What is taking McBoy so long? I'm starving to death." I honestly say, okay well maybe i was exaggerating a tad bit.
"Uh, McBoy?" His skeptical look is amusing.
"McDonald's plus Boy is equal to McBoy!" I chuckle. Hey, discussing that was totally uncalled for.
"I'm unimpressed, Jake." I start off, "I thought you were smart enough to know the concept of nicknaming people." I blankly finish what i was saying.
"Using my words now?... I know my choice of words are cool, but i didn't know that it was cool enough to quote."
"Whatever makes you sleep at night, Parker!" I snarl at him.
The loud, ear-blasting music from the radio is disturbing but it happens to be the only thing to keep Jake awake. (That rhymes! Jake, Awake!)
Only an hour more of driving, and we would be home.
I look out the window and i struggle to keep my eyes open. It's thirty minutes before midnight, its sleep hours! And its winter, Unicorns like me should be hibernating! (I don't even know if Unicorns do their fair share of hibernation.)
And the kind side of me thinks that its just polite enough to stay awake, instead of sleeping selfishly while this guy, Jake, did all the work to drive us home to Pittsburg in one piece.
A rough stop startles me out of my thoughts.
"What's going on?" I notice that there are a few cars ahead that had stopped and i knew that that must be the reason of the traffic before us.
Jake unbuckles and gets out of the car. I follow him outside, fixing my beanie and my scarf.
He knocks at one of the car's window and talks to the driver.
By the time i came to his side, he was running his hand through his hair anxiously.
He glances at me and i furrow my brows.
"The road's still not cleared. I think we have to stay the night." He declares.
"I think so too. Besides, its pretty late."
