You might get there in the end

OLIVE WAS THANKFUL THAT she hadn't been completely there to celebrate her fifteenth birthday for a second time. She imagined that if she had, it would have been a rather bittersweet feeling for her. Throughout this life, one of the positive things about celebrating her birthday was that she knew for certain that she could count on not spending it alone.

Y/n's fifteenth birthday didn't really bring any particularly strong emotions or fond memories to the surface . . . since she didn't really do anything during it. She spent it by Dylan's side in the hospital. Dylan wasn't able to do anything. The chemo treatment made her very weak, unable to walk even. It was a rather horrible sight to see.

But Dylan reassured Y/n that she didn't feel any pain.

Stupidly enough, Y/n had believed her.

And now she was almost an entire two months into her fifth year at Hogwarts and she had spent most, if not all of her time with her friends, which now only consisted of the Marauders and Lily.

It seemed like it was just yesterday she had woken up as a completely new person. It seemed like it was just yesterday she had figured out who her sister was and what she was going to have to go through when she got older. It seemed like it was just yesterday she had made the decision to do anything within her power to save them.

In the beginning, she hadn't really cared about her studies and focused more on the real life issues that were going on outside of Hogwarts. The Professors hadn't initially taken notice, since her magical abilities made her scores a whole of a lot better at the end of the school term. So, the real declines in her results during tests and essays didn't really count much. She wasn't even sure she was going to make it into her 20s so why waste her time on useless essays about the 'tickling charm' or '30 different star constellations and their magical benefits'. No, she had other matters to worry about. Like these dang trinkets that couldn't be maxed the fuck out.

Olive reminisced about how McGonagall had spoken to her about her falling behind in her early years at Hogwarts. Slughorn, the head of Slytherin house and the person who was actually supposed to care about her, had just let it slip that she wasn't causing as much trouble now as she had in her earlier years, so Olive knew that Slughorn saw her decline in joy and happiness as a good thing. Since she was no longer actively enjoying creating trouble with the Marauders.
