↬↝∗✶✾✶∗↜↫ ↬↝∗✶ ✽✿✽ ✶∗↜↫ ↬↝∗✶✾✶∗↜↫AS THE TRAIN TO Hogwarts blew its horn, signalling that it was time for takeoff, Olive Evans found herself alone on the platform. Lily had ran ahead, her face full of happiness as she caught sight of her girl-friends. Olive, on the other hand, felt a pang of uncertainty. She watched Lily greet her best friends, which also now seemed to include Dorcas Meadowes; her former best friend; who was now in an open relationship with Marlene McKinnon. Lily gave them all a side hug and then turned in Olive's direction, waving her over. Upon seeing this, the other girls also looked in her direction. Alice, always smiling, also waved her over while Mary only smiled in her direction awkwardly.
Dorcas and Marlene however, looked in her direction but made no effort to acknowledge her and then proceeded to enter the train.
Olive's heart felt heavy. Every time Dorcas ignored her it made her feel like utter garbage and with the weight of their complicated winter break on top of that; her feelings were all over the place. The way she was currently feeling was probably how they would have felt during her episode.
Olive shook her head, not wanting to risk dampening their joyful back-to-school excitement by not being as happy as they were. Lily frowned, but let her sister step onto the train by herself. Olive sighed as she glanced down the passageways, Reggie's cage in her left hand.
She glanced down the length of the Gryffindor carriage, where she knew the Marauders would be. The thought of joining them made her feel slightly anxious; she wasn't sure how James would react if she walked in. Would he feel uncomfortable? Annoyed? Sad?
So, instead of dealing with that complicated situation she opted for solitude, deciding it would be easier to avoid any potential awkwardness in a compartment by herself.
Walking further down the train towards the Slytherin cart, she passed compartment after compartment, each one filled with chattering students. The sound of laughter and conversation made her feel sick to her stomach. Never had she thought that after last year she would be on her own again. And never in a million years had she ever thought that it would be because she had made out with James Potter who her sister fancied the daylight out of. Or because Dorcas currently hated her.
When she reached the Slytherin carriage, it wasn't difficult to find a compartment that was empty. The amount of people sorted into Slytherin compared to the other houses was drastically lower. Olive thought that perhaps that was because of its bad reputation. Slytherin was known as the house for the evil, manipulative and corrupt. It wasn't hard to see why.
Slytherin's were very intelligent and often used methods that to some weren't very good. Efficiency and things such as self-preservation were valued traits. Perhaps some of those traits had been adapted over time. . . due to the prejudice the houses held toward them. Self-preservation wasn't exactly selfishness but many could confuse it as such.A lot of the people working in the ministry with high positions had been in Slytherin and that wasn't a coincidence.
Slytherin's weren't exactly innocent. Her house' declining numbers were because of their views on muggleborns. Seeing as you could ask the hat not to sort you into a specific house, many muggleborns that the hat thought suited for Slytherin had probably asked the hat to sort them elsewhere.
