Olive concentrated, closing her eyes and the diary clenched tightly in her left hand as she muttered the incantation. She released her clenched fists and let the charm run free, a coldness engulfed her and within seconds, she had cast a disillusionment charm which made her almost invisible. Regulus grabbed her shoulders and pushed her to a spot behind the bookshelf where he had just been.
The study door creaked open, and Lucius Malfoy's voice filled the room, sharp with annoyance. "Regulus, what are you doing in here?"
Regulus quickly took a step to the side, adopting a nonchalant pose as Lucius entered. He forced a bored expression onto his face, hoping to deflect suspicion.
"Lucius, I was looking for a book," Regulus replied, trying to sound convincingly disinterested.
Lucius's cold eyes swept the room, lingering on Regulus. "This is my study. You know I don't like anyone being in here without my permission."
Regulus shook his head, feigning innocence. "I didn't think it would be a problem. Needed a break from the ball."
Lucius's gaze narrowed as he inspected the room. Olive held her breath, praying her charm was good enough. She watched as Lucius scanned the bookshelves and the desk, his fingers brushing over papers and trinkets.
She prayed that he wouldn't look for the diary. Because it was currently . . . in her hands.
"Someone's been in here," Lucius said, his tone filled with suspicion.
Regulus's heart pounded, but he maintained his casual demeanor. "I haven't seen anyone else. Maybe one of the house elves?"
Lucius's gaze lingered on Regulus a moment longer before he turned back to the room, clearly not convinced. "Be careful, Regulus. There are things in this house not meant for wandering eyes. Keep your curiosity in check or I will check it for you."
Regulus nodded obediently. "Of course, Lucius."
Satisfied for now, Lucius turned and left the room, closing the door behind him. Regulus waited a few moments before he moved, then signaled to Olive that it was clear for her to come out. She lifted the charm, and stepped out from behind the bookcase.
