"Hey sis, what's happening?" called Mike, looking over from the Eggo waffles he was making in the toaster for El
Nancy stormed past him, running up to her room.
Mike raised his eyebrows, "Someone is in a bad mood"
El sucked on the top part of her lip, worried, "Should we check on her, Mike?"
Mike smirked, "Check on Nancy? No, she's fine. Besides if I set foot in her room, she would dissemble my body. Nancy gets like this, you know that, El. She's just dramatic that's all. Look, she probably asked Johnathon for a puppy and he said no. That's just Nancy for you"
~
Nancy fell into her bed and burst into tears. She didn't even care that her mascara was going to most definitely stain her satin pillowcase.
Johnathon and her were over. She should have seen it coming. She knew that she should have seen it coming but it still sent her into total shock. She thought she loved him and now everything felt upside down.
Well, not THAT kind of upside down.
She kept replaying the morning in her head a million times...
"Nancy, what the hell is going on?" demanded Johnathon over a bowl of Waffelos
Nancy giggled , "It's hard to take you seriously over your milk mustache"
"Nancy Wheeler, I'm serious"
Nancy sat up, "What?" she asked shakily
"You know what. Last night was a disaster"
"Okay just because we didn't... you know what doesn't mean it was a disaster. I loved the movie, it was super cute!" Nancy said, positively taking a small bite of her cereal, "Besides, your brother was here. I had to be quiet"
Johnathon put his hand on his head, pushing his bangs back, "You and I both know that's not why. Everything had been different between us since that time at the library. Look, if you have something to tell me then just say it. Do you even like me anymore?"
"Are you implying I'm cheating on you?" asked Nancy, her heart hurting
Johnathon sighed, "Nope, but I think ever since you started hanging out more and more with Robin and Steve you've...you have eyes for someone else now"
Nancy let out a nervous laugh, "Johnathon that's ridiculous"
"Is it though? I see the way you look at Steve"
"Steve?! Steve? Really? Come on. Okay if we want to play the accusing game then I can do that too cause you obviously don't trust me and maybe I don't trust you either" Nancy said, finally raising her voice
A flame was blazing her blue eyes
Johnathon nodded slowly, "Yeah, I can't do this anymore, Nancy. This relationship is honestly starting to feel more like a chore more-so than anything else"
Nancy blinked back tears, feeling a lump form in her throat, "Wow really? A chore? What are you my babysitter?"
"Lately it's kinda felt like that, Nance. Who knows where you go off to during evenings out"
Nancy stood up and said, firmly, "Don't call me Nance. Ever again"
Will came in from the other room, nervously fiddling with his hands, "Hey guys, is everything okay?"
He looked so innocent and gentle in his turtle neck and his bowl-cut bangs. Looking between the brothers Nancy saw a sweet guy and one she didn't even recognize anymore
"Goodbye Johnathon" she said, grabbing her overnight bag and leaving the bowl of cereal on the table, "And Will cover your ears"
Will obliged and went into the other room
Nancy looked at Johnathon and remarked, "And have you ever thought that maybe the last few times weren't successful because you just suck in bed? Just some food for thought" and she slammed the door behind her
~
Nancy woke up feeling sick and achey all over. She knew she wasn't actually sick, she just fell asleep in her dress clothes on her bed with makeup on and only had 3 bites of cereal that morning. And it was already 3 in the afternoon. Nancy got up, wincing as she remembered how she got there. She broke up with Johnathon, or he broke up with her... either way you put it they were over.
She got up to look at herself in the mirror, her hair that had been perfectly curled the night before was now all tangled. Mascara messily adorned her eyes making her look like Patch from 101 Dalmatians.
She had been supposed to go out for dinner with Steve and Robin later but she felt awful and didn't want to go to dinner feeling like such a mess. However, something about the thought of Robin being there made her feel comforted. There was something about Robin that always made Nancy feel better no matter what was going on.
Nancy always tried to play it cool around Robin but inside she was always so happy to see her and wanted to grab her into a hug every time she saw her. It was probably just because Robin was her closest female friend. Of course, right?
Nancy took a deep breath and decided she had better clean herself up. Staying inside her room all day wouldn't help anything
Just as she was making her way to her bathroom Mike slammed open her door and yelped, "Yow! What happened to you? Looks like you've got two black eyes"
"Yeah? And I'm going to give you two black eyes right now!" shouted Nancy and she didn't even have to move a foot before Mike took off screaming down the hallway
Nancy took her time fixing herself up in the bathroom and after a nice shower, re-styling her hair and applying makeup she felt almost fully like herself again. She still had a dull headache from crying herself to sleep earlier but as long as it didn't get worse than that, she could handle it.
Nancy made her way downstairs and saw her mom ironing some clothes in the living room.
"Hi sweetheart! Goodness, you were really sleepy huh?" chuckled Mrs. Wheeler
Nancy flashed a smile, "Yeah, you could say that! Hey, where's Mike?"
"He's down in the basement with his friends. I think El, Lucas and Dustin are down there right now"
"Not Will?" asked Nancy
"No, I haven't seen Will. Why?"
Nancy shrugged, "No reason. Well I guess I like checking up on him, he's a really fragile kid"
Mrs. Wheeler rubbed Nancy's back, "Are you okay, Nancy? You don't have your usual sparkle to you?"
"I'm fine Mom!" she reassured, "I'm just gonna go to dinner with Steve and Robin"
"Oh how wonderful! Tell Robin I said hi! She is such an angel just like you!" gushed Mrs. Wheeler
Nancy took in a deep breath and smiled, "I'll let her know, Mom"
On her way out the door Nancy almost tripped on a big stuffed cat that was in the middle of the floor. She muttered to herself, "You'd think we have dogs... or a toddler"
She went over to the basement door and threw the cat toy down the stairs. She heard screams follow and she smiled to herself satisfied, "Can't win every time, Mike"
