Nancy made her way through school with her head down. She wasn't in the mood to see or talk to anybody. Her world had come crashing down on her in a matter of days and she was still processing everything that happened.
While she was at her locker getting books for her next class, Johnathon came over, "Nancy! Umm...hi"
Nancy tried to resist an eye-roll. She slowly turned to him, "Johnathon, you are the last person I want to see right now"
Johnathon winced, "Ouch. Okay look, I'm here to apologize. I was out-of-my-mind drunk that night and I'm really sorry. Nancy, you know I'd never hurt you"
Nancy turned to him in disbelief, "Why are you still talking to me? You made it beyond clear that we're over and trust me, I am very happy about it"
Johnathon looked around and then murmured, "Well you don't look happy"
Nancy slammed her locker shut, "Believe me, it has nothing to do with you" and she started on her way to her next class
Johnathon nearly tripped over himself trying to catch up to her as she walked fast through the hallways, "Nancy!"
Yet she still ignored him
Johnathon managed to catch up to her, "All I wanted to say is I'm sorry, okay? I don't know if we'll ever be friends again but... I'm here for you"
Nancy nodded and said quietly, "Okay Johnathon" and made her way into the classroom.
~
Once the last class of the day came around, Nancy couldn't believe how exhausted she was. It was so draining to put up a front and pretend like she wasn't dying inside.
Of course it was a class with Robin and if Nancy didn't already have perfect attendance and grades in that class, she seriously would have skipped.
But after having seen Robin doodling in her notebook at the back of the room, Nancy's heart lurched. The class hadn't started yet and Nancy raced to the teacher's desk.
"Hi Mrs. Patterson! Umm I'm having some stomach issues, could I possibly see the nurses' office?" Nancy asked in a whisper
"Go ahead, Miss Wheeler" the teacher sighed
"Thank you!" Nancy replied, gratefully
Nancy spent the majority of the class hiding out in the bathroom, working on some homework in her notes. Just because she wasn't in class definitely never meant she stopped studying.
Once Nancy heard the final bell of the day, she knew she had to find Robin. She couldn't bear this anymore. It was ridiculous, they both loved each other and Nancy decided she wasn't going to let Robin's mom run either of their lives.
Nancy got the rest of her books from the classroom and after noticing Robin was no longer in the classroom, she went out to the lockers to go find her.
Her heart was racing and she felt a knot in her stomach, terrified that everything would go wrong again. Nancy was trying her hardest to stay positive but it was becomingly increasingly difficult.
Nancy found Robin at her locker and her heart felt like it dropped into her throat. How was she going to find the words to say how she felt?
Nancy took in a deep breath and told herself, "I did it before, I can do this again"
Nancy strided over to Robin, trying to appear as confident as possible and ignore the feeling inside her that felt like a ton of wasps were in her stomach. Definately not butterflies this time...she was terrified out of mind.
Nancy slammed her backpack down in front of Robin causing Robin to jump, startled.
"No" Nancy said, crossing her arms
Robin furrowed her brows, "No, what?"
"No, I am not letting your mom get to decided what happens to us. And don't even tell me it wasn't your mom cause I know it's her influence, Robin. I'm not an idiot" Nancy said, firmly
For the first time, Nancy saw tears threatening to fall from Robin's eyes, "Nance, I'm sorry..."
Nancy grabbed Robin's hands in her own and said quietly, "I'm going to fight for us, Robin. Please, jump with me. I'm not willing to give this up"
A few boys that walked by gave a confused look at the girls. Nancy raised her eyebrows, "Keep walking! Nothing to see here, just girl-talk!"
Once the boys rushed away, Robin mumbled, "Nancy, you don't understand. We seriously can't do this. My mom...you don't know my mom"
Nancy swallowed and said, shakily, "You're right I don't. But I know you and I love you and I'm willing to do whatever it takes. But I can't do it alone. Please, can't you at least try?"
A tear rolled down Robin's cheek as she said, "I can't have her hurt you"
Nancy furrowed her brows, "What?"
"Trust me, Nance, she will ruin your life. And I can't have that happen to you. I'm so sorry for how things ended up that night but... but I can't do that to you" said Robin, sorrowfully
Nancy shook her head, "Don't you get it? She already ruined my life by having you break up with me"
Robin whimpered, "I never wanted to hurt you, Nance. I'm so sorry, I thought she'd never find out"
Nancy inhaled sharply, "Robin, if you love me...meet me at the dance tonight. I don't care what your mom has up her sleeve. I'm not afraid of her."
Before Robin could reply, Nancy grabbed her backpack and turned on her heel, leaving Robin with that.
Maybe it was a bit dramatic but Nancy felt at a loss...she didn't know what else she could do.
She ran into Steve in the parking lot and explained to him what happened.
Steve muttered, "Well Nancy, she's just trying to protect you. That's a bit of an ultimatum you gave her"
Nancy's blue eyes were blazing as she felt the fiery inside her, "What's she going to do? What can her mom possibly do?"
"I don't know but do you really want to find out?" Steve said, nervously
"I have a freaking revolver, Steve" Nancy reminded
"Okay, good point" Steve nodded
"I'm going to that dance tonight...are you coming?" asked Nancy
"Do I have a choice?" groaned Steve
"There'll be cute single girls there!" persuaded Nancy
Steve nodded, "Deal"
