"So I guess this is a big change in original plans from the movies or dinner huh?" Steve remarked as him and Nancy were driving through the night on their way to the dance
"Yeah, I can't believe I'm really doing this. Thank you Steve so much for doing this for me" said Nancy gratefully, smiling at him in the passenger seat
"Of course. Hey, you'd do the same for me" Steve smirked, sitting back
Nancy nodded, "Absolutely. I'd do anything for you"
Steve bantered, "And this is my 'I'd do anything for you' cause I guarantee I'm going to get kicked out of this dance for being a highschool graduate"
Nancy started laughing, "Oh my goodness, that would make my entire night!"
Steve raised his eyebrows, "Yeah, glad someone finds it amusing"
The duo pulled into a parking space in the back of Hawkins High. Music from the speakers of the dance could already be heard.
Nancy took in a deep breath. She checked her reflection in the mirror of the car. She had to admit, her makeup did look really good and so did her hair which she gave some bouncy curls. She wore a red velvety dress with black sleeves and some dark heels that she was praying she wouldn't trip in.
Steve sighed, "Come on, Nancy, you look great"
"It's not that, Steve. But thank you" she said, quietly
Steve ran a hand through his swept-back mane of brown hair, "Well I'm glad you're confident"
Nancy muttered, "What is she's not even here tonight, Steve?"
"Hey, don't think like that! Don't worry, okay? Let's just go in there and check the place out before we needlessly worry. I know how you are, Nancy. You gotta snap out of this and just go in there!" encouraged Steve
Nancy looked up through the front car window to see Hawkins High that seemed all the more daunting than it did at daybreak where academics were the only real concern. Now at night dances were involved and feelings were involved.
Steve opened the car door.
Nancy furrowed her brows, "What are you doing?"
"I'm going in there. I'll meet you in 5 minutes. I WILL see you in there, right?"
Nancy crossed her arms and mumbled, "Yes"
Steve put a hand to his ear, "Sorry, what was that? Couldn't hear you"
"Yes! I said yes" she repeated more loudly
Steve grinned and shut Nancy's car door behind him as he sauntered across the parking lot and inside the school. Nancy knew he was just trying to help her. This was something that she was going to have to do alone.
About five minutes ended up passing, give or take, and Nancy knew it was time. She got out of the car, feeling a bundle of nerves that made her want to just jump back in the car, drive home and curl up in a ball on her bed. But she decided against it.
Walking across the parking lot was fine but walking through the spongy grass in heels to get to the gymnasium doors was something Nancy was not particularly fond of. There had to have been several better ways to have gotten in but Nancy wasn't in the mindset to be deciphering all those options out.
As Nancy got checked in and walked into the gym where the dance was taking place she was instantly met by loud music, smells of fruit punch and sweat, and the purple and blue hues from lights above the rafters.
Nancy glanced around seeing if she could recognize anyone but the party cast a different kind of glow on her fellow-students and not just from the lighting. She felt like she wasn't going to recognize anyone, this dance seemed different from the others. Everybody was really in a 'party mode' much different than she usually sees her peers at school. However, Nancy knew for sure she'd be able to spot Robin from anywhere so she kept her eyes peeled.
