Chapter 11

HE made his way towards the island in the center of the kitchen and grabbed a small knife to cut up the vegetables in his hand.

His muscles ached with numb pain. His head still ached and his eyelids were heavy from the incident the night before.

And even then, he knew that he had to at least do something. Despite how tired he was.

As he sliced the vegetables into pieces, he heard a loud thud of familiar heels coming down the stairs.

And soon enough, the noise got closer to the kitchen. He gulped and turned around with a bright smile just as she entered the room.

"Good morning, jagiya!" He greeted cheerfully, letting go of the knife in his hand to rush toward her.

She giggled and stretched her arms wide open, allowing him to engulf her in a tight hug.

"Good morning, beautiful..." she began in a soft voice, rubbing his back gently to reassure him, and herself, "what are you doing outside of bed?"

He sighed and enjoyed her scent for a few, long moments.

"I was trying to make you breakfast before you go to work. I only just started though, so I think it will take a while."

She nodded with a grateful smile, holding him closer by his small waist.

"Hey- don't worry about that, okay? I'm going to get some coffee on the way and I'll be fine."

He shook his head, a look of plea shooting up his eyes.

"No- please! Let me make you something. It's the least I can do."

She stared into his pleading eyes for a few seconds, and eventually gave in.

His puppy eyes were something she couldn't handle already.

It became her weakness.

"Okay... Fine. But you get that done and you're going straight to bed!"

He nodded, satisfied. Letting go of her torso, he took small steps towards the island once again and turned his attention to the vegetables.

"This looks good already." She complimented, earning a wide smile from him. His eyes sparkled at the sentence.

"Thank you, Jagiya..."

She made her way towards the row of stools on the other side of the island and sat down, putting her palms close to her face.

"So when are we going to continue practicing?" He asked in a soft, Korean accent, looking up from the cutting board.

"As soon as you get better," she replied, her eyes still following his figure as he made his way towards the fridge, "and we still need to go grocery shopping."

He nodded in enthusiasm.

"Yes! Can we get ramen, please?"

She smiled warmly, her eyes sparkling with satisfaction.

"Of course, baby. Whatever you want."

He bowed a little to show how grateful he was, then grabbed a jar from the fridge and closed the door a few seconds later.

"I can't believe I have to see Lauren again today..." Mal groaned quietly to herself, her voice almost inaudible.

But he could make out the words whatsoever. He looked up at her sadly and sent her a sympathetic smile.

"I-I'm sorry, jagiya... You probably don't like her," he reasoned, which made her nod right away.

"Yeah... I really don't."

He wanted to ask why, because as far as he knew, his wife was the social one out of them both. Everyone liked her, except Lauren.

He winced as he suddenly remembered his last interaction with Lauren, and he somehow could understand why Mal didn't like her.

But did she know?

How would she know?

He gulped and let go of the knife, tears welling up in his eyes.

The pain he felt came rushing back to him. Both physical and emotional. How traumatized he was by having someone other than his wife touch him without his consent like that.

How embarrassed he was.

Just as he was finally getting close to her.

Why did Lauren do that?

"Baby, are you okay?"

Her caring voice echoed through his mind.

He let out a small, muffled sob and stepped away from the counter, hurrying to her side to engulf her in a tight, desperate hug.

"Beautiful, what's wrong? Is everything okay?"

He hugged her torso tightly and sunk his face into her neck, allowing a small sob to escape his mouth. His shoulders trembled and his body shook. Once again, his eyelids grew heavy.

"T-There's something I need to tell you. Please."

She rubbed his back in reassurance and planted a small kiss on the side of his neck.

"Baby, what's wrong?" She asked once again, her voice worried. She continued to rub his back to calm him down.

"I-I..." he began, voice trembling with despair.

And just as he gathered his courage to speak, to tell her what he had experienced, they both heard a loud noise followed by a vibration coming from somewhere on the island.

She turned around to glance at the island right where her phone was.

You maniac-

"Baby, I-I have to answer that," she spoke, her eyes guilty, "I'm sorry, baby. Really."

He let go of her torso and quickly wiped away his remaining tears with his sleeve. He replaced the frown with a wide smile in order to tell her that it was okay.

"Go answer it, jagiya. Don't worry about me."

She did.

"I'm really sorry, beautiful. I have to leave."

She hurried towards him to hug his waist once again, lightly kissing his forehead in the process.

"I'm really sorry, okay? I'll see you tonight."

He nodded sadly and returned the hug, another tear streaming down his face.

"I'll buy you ramen on the way home!" She exclaimed as she hurried out of the room, towards the front door.

He stared at where she once stood, his heart aching with guilt.

And just like that, she was gone.
