"Thanks for eating lunch with me. I heard that you already know the way around the house. I guess now you don't need me?" he asked.
"Yes I did, but if you have things for me, just call me okay? I'm gonna read a few books." I take both plate and walk out with him. He nodded and went to do his own business. I carry the dirty plates to the kitchen and put them in the sink. Before I wash it, I had look around to make sure nobody saw me do the house work, there are maids but I'm not gonna forgot how I was raised.
I washed the plates and took a cloth to dry them. Just when I reach for the wet plate, somebody shocked me.
"Trying to win our heart by doing house work?" Liam asked. He stood firmly behind me, making the plate fell from my hand to the floor. It broke and the broken glasses triggered something in my mind. My eyes closed shut.
"How DARE you broke my expensive plate! I let you stay for free, yet you ruined my kitchen! Clean this shit up and wait in your room. You're gonna learn something today." Oliver shouts across the room. It's been a month or two since he bought me, and I haven't really managed working here. I clean the broken glasses and ran to my room, just a few minutes later, Oliver kicked the door open, his belt is in his hand. He didn't take long before shouting my name while whipping my back.
"Sara?" he shaked my shoulder. I open my eyes and realized I'm in the present. I exhaled a sigh of relief. Liam clicked his fingers in front of my eyes which made me turn around to look at him.
"Oh my god, I'm so sorry. I'll clean this up and pay for the damage." I kneeled and pick the glasses.
"Sara Walker. Stand up this instance." Jack lift his stick and hit the floor once. Shocked by his existence, I stand up and hides the plates behind my back.
"Now come here." he said."Yes, Jack." I look around and walked past Liam, who looked just as confused. Mary and Noah were peeking from upstairs.
"Now let me see your hand."
"I'm so sorry, I promise I'll pay this back." I said, slowly putting my hands in front of him. The glasses I grip was put on a handkerchief on Jack's hand.
"Leave the cleaning to the maids. Now go in my study." he stand aside. I turn and look at Liam then at Jack. The house is as quiet as the mouse. Nobody dared to utter a single word. I walked into his study and stand in the middle. A minute later, Jack entered.
"I promise this will be the last time I break your plates. Please, don't hurt me." I begged with both my hand close together.
"Calm down, child. I'm not angry over one accident if you think I'm gonna hurt you. We're you hurt by your past employer?" he asked. I didn't reply, only stares at him with my dry eyes. Even when it's as scary as the thought of getting beaten up by another person, I no longer could cry for forgiveness, only begs.
"Answer me, youngster."
I nodded. "But it was only because I made mistakes."
"Why must you try to justify his actions? It's wrong. Now you don't have to worry, I won't lay a hand on you, but what happened today will leave them all hanging." he said. I get what he meant.
"Am I supposed to just tell them why I froze?" I asked.
"We wouldn't force you but they'll be curious. They don't know where you come from or what's your status." he replied. I nodded.
"Give me a little time. I'll tell them when I'm ready. Can you distract them?" I asked.
"I'll try, is there anything else I can do for you?" Jack offered.
"I'm feeling a little sick, feverish perhaps. I think I'm gonna lay till it go down. I hope I can get some time alone." I asked and holds my forehead.
"Oh dear, you must have had it hard. I understand, the sudden events gave you quite a shock, I'm proud that you're able to cooperate with my request. Go ahead, rest well." Jack said and opened the door behind him. I didn't reply and just walk out and smile at him.
Once I'm in front of my room, the scene that happened this morning happened again. Liam was standing and leaned by the door. He saw me walking and said; "Here."
He throwed a small box onto my hand. It's bandaids. "Why are you being so kind this evening? And take it back, I don't need it." I walked right to him and put it back to his chest. Before I could even step away, he grip my wrist.
"You can lie, but not in front of my eyes. And you're burning." he opened the box with one hand and his mouth.
"Hold this." he took out a few bandages and gave the box for me to hold."I can do it myself." I muttered.
"Pfft, of course you can." he chuckled. He said as he put them carefully on me.
"There, no more cuts." he let go of my wrist.
"Well.. Thank you." I'm shocked, he's actually mindful.
"Technically, the plate fell because I made you surprised. So it's a bit of my fault. Sorry." he said and walked away. I entered my room. The hands that have been numbed to pain, without I realized, it was hurt and he saw it. Perhaps it was guilt that made him open a little to put these bandaid on me, but I think with that, I can try to made him trust me.
I laid on the bed, covering myself with the heavy blanket till it reached my chin. I close my eyes and the softness of the bed made it easier to sleep.
Around 4 hours later, it's night. A knocked on the door woke me up. I stood up and opened the door.
"Yes, Noah and Mary?" I smiled.
"Dinner's ready. Are you coming, Sara?" Mary asked.
"Actually, father had asked us to fetch you." Noah cut in.
"Sure, let's go." I said before taking the scarf behind the door to cover my body. I'm dressed warmly since this morning but at night, it's colder. I held both of their hands and they led the way.
There, I could feel a bit tension between Liam and Jack. Almost like they had bickered.
"I'm sorry I'm late. Good evening." I greeted Jack. He nodded and the maids put the foods on the table."Are you feeling better? I had told Noah and Mary not to disturb you but they were eager to have dinner together." Jack smiled at his little twins.
"After I have rested, I am feeling a bit charged." I joked and we all ate. "When will you and Liam be leaving for tomorrow?" I asked.
"We'll board at 9 am sharp." Jack looked at Liam. He nodded in replies. I joined the conversation between Noah and Mary, they were talking about schools. Funny how a day felt so short and the last time I went to school still felt fresh even after the past years.
"I'm done eating, can I excuse myself?" I asked. I've learnt that the maids will clean the dishes.
"Sure, tomorrow at 8 in the morning, come to my study, okay?" Jack told. I nodded and left the dining room.
Back in my room, I've listed out the important things I need to do immediately and some more notes that I need Jack's help. He said he'll look at it tomorrow, I guess they're busy packing.
