"We should go on a date," Sam said the next day at school. Sam and Devin were walking together to class.

"Why's that?" Devin asked.

"Well, other than the fact that we are- you know-" Sam lowered his voice to a whisper-"dating. I'm sure you want to have sex with me, considering your track record. And I'm not having sex with you until we've been on- and I'm serious- at least five dates. I am not like the girls you play. I'm in this for the long haul."

"Me too," Devin replied in a whisper, glancing around and hoping Klara wasn't near. "Like I said, I don't want to just ditch you after sex. I'm just not good at dating."

"I can help you with that," Sam smiled, "Dinner with me at 5 pm in two days? My mom can even drop us off. Do you like Italian?"

"Sure," Devin shrugged, "I like food. Do I have to like...dress up?"

"God no. I hate dressing up," Sam shivered, "The Italian place I have in mind is not exactly a fancy restaurant. It sells pesto and alfredo, but it also has hot wings and mac'n cheese on the menu. And it's an add-on to a gas station."

"Oh," Devin smirked, "Sounds like my kind of place."

"It's a date then," Sam smiled.

They smiled at each other for a second until they each reached their separate classes. Sam lingered at his class's doorway and smiled really big.

"See you at lunch," he smiled. Devin felt fluttery. Maybe he was having a heart attack?

"See you," he said back.

They separated.

"Hey," Tanner greeted Devin as they sat down for lunch.

"Hey," Devin said. He was in a happier mood compared to his normal grumpy self. It wasn't blatantly obvious to strangers, but Tanner could obviously read it.

"You seem happier these days. Is it because of Sam?" Tanner wondered, unzipping his lunchbox.

"Partly," Devin mumbled. He still wasn't feeling very open.

"That's sweet," Tanner replied, smiling, "So, are you gay? Or...?"

"To be determined," Devin replied, "I'm not so sure of myself anymore."

Tanner shrugged, taking out his ham and cheese sandwich.

"It happens," he said, unclasping the plastic sandwich bag his food was in, until he paused. "Hey, Devin?"

"Yeah?"

"You should come over to my house today," Tanner looked at Devin seriously, "I-uh I have something I've been wanting to tell you. It's definitely best-friend-only type stuff."

"...Okay," Devin wondered if this was the topic that Tanner had been struggling to tell him about.

"Okay...cool," Tanner smiled.

Sam then came over to the table and sat extra close to Devin. He was just carrying a tray of food, but Devin thought he looked hot.

"So, when are we going to tell Klara about us?" Sam smiled deviously.

"Whenever we feel like it," Devin said back. Sam ran his hands together and had an excited smile on his face.

"We should do it after our date," Sam said, "We'll be officially dating then. I can't wait to rub it in Klara's face."

"You two are evil," Tanner commented.

"That's what makes us perfect for each other," Sam snickered. He gave a smile toward Devin, who almost gave him a smile back.
