"You're seriously sitting in a waiting room during graduation?" Tanner had texted him. Devin huffed. He had already told Tanner that twice before, but Tanner still didn't seem to believe it. The message, however, helped relieve some of the boredom of sitting in a hospital waiting room.
"You're seriously texting during graduation?" Devin messaged back. He was still pretty slow at typing- not used to the digital keyboard. After he sent the message, he slid his phone in his pocket and continued watching the crowd.
Sam's mom was sitting a seat away from him. They were both kind of tense. Neither of them spoke to each other without Sam present. However, Sam was currently undergoing surgery, so they had to put aside the awkwardness while they waited for Sam to emerge.
"It's been a while," Devin started awkwardly, trying to form some kind of conversation with the woman- his boyfriend's mother.
"Yes, well, he signed up for a lot of different things. After a lot of consultation and research, of course," she replied with a blank voice. Her tone indicated that she didn't entirely like talking to Devin- most people assumed the worst of him before they met him. It probably made it worse that Devin had punched Sam upon meeting.
"It's been three hours," Devin clarified, "What things did he sign up for?"
"The penis, of course," she replied, "With some kind of feature that lets him pee standing up. Then the balls. The penis and the balls are two separate surgeries. I think there's also supposed to be a pump in the balls, for-" she paused to clear her throat uncomfortably- "erections."
"Ah," Devin nodded. His face was red, but only slightly. He was just mildly embarrassed when talking about his boyfriend's genitals with his mother.
"You know, I'm happy that he's going to be more comfortable with his body," She admitted to him, "But I can't help but to be a little disappointed." These words made Devin stiffen slightly, then Miss Jenkins continued. "When my- When Sam's father left, I thought it would be us two girls, against the world. Now, I guess, it's just me and my little boy. My wild, infuriating, endearing little boy."
Devin didn't know what to say, so he just nodded like he understood- which he didn't.
"If you hurt my boy," her tone got sharper, her eyes narrowed, "I'm willing to go to jail for the consequences you'll receive."
"I understand," he replied earnestly, "Then, if anyone else hurts him, you can't judge me for getting arrested on the same grounds."
"I agree," she said, and Devin thought he almost saw her smile. But it disappeared in a flash. "My mother says that you are the kid with a kid. A girl just got pregnant not too long ago- with your baby. Should I be worried about you?"
"No," Devin said, "Not anymore."
"Good," she folded her arms.
The conversation ended with a ping from Devin's phone. After pulling the phone out of his pocket, he clicked it on figuring it was another message from Tanner.
It was from Klara.
"Have you thought about my offer?" it said. No initial greeting. No small talk. Straight to the point.
Devin had been expecting the message. He hadn't brought up the topic, even after messaging Klara's number. It took him a moment for him to respond, but he ended up just messaging, "Yes," in reply.
He still didn't like Klara but talking to her had become more manageable. At least, he wasn't at risk of punching a pregnant woman. Another ping from his phone sounded.
