(A/N get ready for a lot of time skips. There will be many leading up to the last chapter)
One Month Later...
Devin had returned from his learner's test. He had failed, but he was close. One more week of studying should give him the nudge he needed. Then, he could finally practice driving. Dakota also went with them, but he was taking his driver's test; he passed, of course.
Nick seemed proud of both of them, either way.
Meanwhile, Sam- who basically lived at Devin's house after his surgery- was sitting on the sofa, scrolling through his computer. Devin knew precisely what he was doing.
"Looking for colleges?" Devin questioned, as he sat next to his boyfriend, wrapping an arm around Sam's shoulders.
"Yes," Sam replied, without looking away from the screen, "How did it go?"
"I failed," Devin grumbled, "But, luckily, I can take it again."
"I can help you study. Whenever you're ready," Sam mentioned, his eyes flitting across the screen. His lip was pulled in by his teeth. Devin wanted to release it with his teeth.
"You look stressed," Devin pointed out.
" A little," Sam admitted, shrugging, "I keep having to message my mom for help. She's still salty that I'm hanging out here more than at our house with her. So, of course, she responds, 'If you were here this would be much easier.' I know, MOM."
"I could help," Nick mentioned, after taking the trash bag out of the bin, "I've never been to college, but I've filled out plenty of forms."
"I wish, but no. It's more like, what's an SSN?" Sam replied, " And then she says-"
"Social Security Number," both Sam and Nick said.
"Yes," Sam agreed, "But then I ask her, so 'what's my number?' And then all she does is complain instead of help me."
"That sounds annoying..." Devin huffed, frustrated that Sam was having a hard time and he couldn't fix it, "Want me to beat her up or yell at her?" Sam snorted in response.
"Babe, not everything can be fixed with violence," Sam shook his head, then mumbled, "No matter how hot that may be."
"Speaking of violence," Nick started, "I'm going upstairs to hit the bag, and maybe actually work out. Do you boys want to join?"
"No," Sam admitted, "Exercise is for the weak."
"I'll go," Devin said, rolling his eyes at Sam. "I'll pretend it's your mom," Devin joked, which made Sam do a little giggle. Sam finally looked away from the computer screen and beckoned Devin for a kiss. Devin obliged. When the kiss broke, Devin noticed that Nick had already left.
Devin briefly wondered if Nick felt lonely.
"I'm not really feeling sore anymore," Sam admitted, looking into Devin's eyes with intent. That brought Devin back to the present. Devin felt his breath catch at how handsome Sam seemed at that moment. He knew what Sam was suggesting.
"Do you want to maybe go out on a date tonight? With me?" Devin murmured, his lips going back in for another kiss. Sam cupped his cheeks and held him to the kiss.
"How could I say no?" Sam preened, then pushed his face away, "Now get out of here you handsome brute. I have scholarship essays to write and college applications to fill."
Devin smiled at him. He did that often recently it seemed.
His life now seemed like a dream compared to his previous one. It took him back to the time when he felt so inferior, when he was constantly beaten and sometimes worse by his father. He used to not dwell on the past, but he had come to accept it slightly after gaining something better. He looked back at Sam from the stairwell- Sam didn't notice.
