2018,

A few months later...|

To say Naoto was tired was an understatement. Naoto was exhausted beyond his limits. Staying up late finishing the details of the case, constant rounds to court, helping find an attorney for you, and after more than 8 months of the tug-of-war; you won the case.

You hard re-joined in your workplace and everything was back to normal...for you.

However for Naoto? He couldn't get himself to concentrate,  "I...wish to stay here with Naoto." You must've thought he hadn't heard you, but he did. He heard every single word of it, how thinking about these words made his heart pound in his chest, blood rush to the tip of his ears.

Naoto groaned as he flopped onto his bed, feeling too tired to get up and change. He kicked his shoes and let himself fall asleep.

DING DONG!

Oh lord, he was going to kill the person who dare disturb his peaceful slumber that he deserved after months of not getting enough sleep!

Naoto grumbled as he walked towards the door, slamming it open which caused you to squeak in surprise.

"Y/N?" he said astounded, "what are you doing here at this time?

"H...hi?" you squeaked. Your eyes trailed down to look at him, his shirt was half-open, tie hanging lose from his neck, hair ruffled haphazardly and eye bags beneath his eyes.

"Did I disturb you?" you asked the obvious.

"Not at all," he replied, his voice still half-asleep, gravelly, "come on in."

You nodded and removed your shoes before entering the apartment, files, files, files everywhere, it was so much messier since you last came. Last time you were with Draken and Mitsuya...this time it was just the two of you...holy shit.

"Sorry, the apartment is a little messy," he said.

"Oh I almost forgot!" you exclaimed, "I got cookies!"

Naoto smiled at your outburst, "Great, I didn't have dinner yet."

You two sat on the table after cleaning it and putting the files in one corner.

Naoto took a hesitant bite of the cookie, his expression quickly contorted into sheer happiness when he fully chewed into it, "this is so good!"

"I am glad you liked it," you chuckled.

Naoto suddenly looked straight into your eyes, making you a little nervous, "Y/N may I ask something?" You nodded hesitantly.

Naoto gulped the glass of water next to him, before he spoke, "All those days ago, what did you mean by, I...wish to stay here with Naoto?"

You blinked at him incredulously, "what is this, a tactic to make me embarrassed?"

He leaned in close to you, his warm breath fanning on your face, "No Y/N, to make you embarrassed I don't need a tactic," his word made you gulp harshly, onyx eyes peering into your soul, "I want to hear it from you, tell me what did you mean by that?"

Blood rushed to your face as you bit your lips, "you already know what I meant," you answered breathlessly.

"I do?" he asked teasingly, "I am afraid you will have to elaborate."

You huffed in embarrassment, trying to avert your eyes, and that's when you did something that shocked the both of you. You leaned in and planted a quick peck on Naoto's lips.

"This is what I meant," you pouted.

"Really?" Naoto chuckled, "well I guess it is only fair I should show my feelings too."

He captured your lips in his, it was tentative at first, but as soon as your arms wrapped around his neck, it was tantalizing. Your body burned wherever his hands roamed. It was euphoric, and after what seemed to be years you were grounded. The man in front of you was Naoto. It wasn't Shuji.

When he pulled away both of you were dishevelled and breathless, it was sort of risque, but boy was it heavenly.

"Good enough?" he asked, placing his forehead on yours.

"Better than good, Naoto," you answered.

"I hope it's not too sudden, but Y/N...I think I am in love with you," Naoto stated.

You were too quiet, wouldn't it be unfair to reply the same when it had just been a year since Shuji died?

Naoto sighed and held your hand in his, "I get if you don't want to answer yet, take your time."

"No wait!" you blurted, "I...love you too, a lot."

"You don't have to force yourself to say it, Y/N, I already told you I don't mind."

"No Naoto, I really love you, I was just surprised."

He smiled and pressed his lips on your knuckles, "I am glad then little birdie."

"Little birdie?" you laughed, "what kind of name is that?"

"Well for starters you were quite literally hanging from the edge that day," he laughed and you shuddered at the unpleasant memory.

"Don't remind me."

"Alright, I won't, little birdie."

And thus began the story of the detective and his little Birdie. |
