HANNAH
The following day began a bit easier than the last, at least physically. Mentally and emotionally? Not a chance. Hannah's chest had been coiled tightly from the moment she woke up, and her stomach was twisted in knots every time she replayed the events from the conference room. The shock of it all. The look on Carmen's face when recognition sank in. The way her own breath had caught, making the world tilt on its axis for a second too long.
Today's schedule kept her mostly out of the office, visiting venues, which ironically, was a blessing in disguise. She couldn't stomach the idea of running into Carmen again. Not yet. Not when her nerves still sparked like a live wire at the mere thought of her. She rubbed the bruise on her head absently. The dull ache there as much from the lingering embarrassment as from the literal knock to the skull.
Her phone buzzed where it sat on a table.
Jules: I see you're not going to be in the office much. What happened yesterday? You okay?
Hannah: Yeah, everything is fine.
Jules: I need to know more about this wedding. Don't think I've forgotten.
Of course she hadn't. Jules had the memory of an elephant along with the nosiness of a bored housewife with a pair of binoculars.
Hannah: Fiiiine.
She let the typing bubbles sit there, faking activity while she stared blankly at the screen. How could she simplify something that felt anything but simple?
Jules: Please... do go on.
Hannah: Remember how I said the woman I met at the wedding was here on a business trip? Something about a merger?
Jules: Yeah?
Hannah: Just keep thinking. It will come to you.
Jules: wait...
Jules: You're fucking kidding. This is a joke, right?
Jules: SERIOUSLY?!
Hannah: Seriously. I wish it was a joke.
Jules: Please tell me that I'm following along correctly. You slept with THE BOSS?!
Hannah sent the face palm emoji and let her head fall forward onto the table
Jules: HANNAH! She OWNS this place now.
Hannah: Yeah, I gathered that. But, how did she not think that I worked for the company she bought out? She said she was a plus-one for her colleague because his wife couldn't make it. It was an employee's wedding!!
Jules: I overheard her telling someone she didn't know it was mostly our office until after she got back. I don't think anyone warned her.
Hannah: Oh my god. I need Xanax.
Jules: I'll give you one when you're back in the office.
This was beginning to be too much. The reality of it was a weight pressing heavily on her shoulders. The universe had some sick sense of humor.
Jules: Also... she just walked past my desk. She's looking even hotter than yesterday!
Jules: If only I was into women...
Jules: God, I would have slept with her too. I see your dilemma.
Hannah groaned and rubbed her eyes. Fantastic. It felt bad enough that she was a walking HR violation... Now her straight friend was gushing about Carmen too.
