CARMEN
Carmen walked with no actual destination in mind. Only the thought of downing a Guinness in memory of her brother kept her moving.
Except, instead of Viktor, she was thinking of her again. That blonde woman had seeped into every spare inch of Carmen's mind.
Carmen's phone pinged, snapping her out of her daze.
Dani: How's it going? Did you have that talk yet?
Dani's timing was uncanny, as always.
Carmen: Yeah.
Dani: How did it go? Everything alright?
Carmen: It went well. She said that she understands.
Carmen hesitated. Should she be honest? It was Dani. She'd see right through the lies anyway, so there was no point in hiding.
Carmen: I feel conflicted.
Dani: So, you DO want to go round 2?!
Carmen rubbed her temples.
Dani: Go do what you always do. You see something you want, and you go after it.
Carmen: Go after what?
Dani: Carm, you always work so hard. Whether it's real feelings or just a distraction... figure it out. Start there.
Carmen: You make it sound so easy.
Dani: Maybe it is. You overthink everything. Don't do that now. It's Friday night! Go out, meet someone, or meet up with that woman again. Your options are endless.
Carmen lowered her phone and looked around.
Rhonda's bar. Of all the places to wind up, here she was.
She was Carmen Mills, for God's sake. This was just a woman. One woman.
Her phone pinged again.
Dani: Also, send me a pic. I'm invested now.
Carmen: Stop.
Dani: You're infatuated. You've never been 'conflicted' before.
Carmen wasn't the nervous type. But this week? She'd been off her game. And it all traced back to one person. And that one person had her eyes set on Carmen as she strode through the door.
She faltered for just a second. Her body stiffening under the heat of that gaze. Drawing a steady breath, she made her way to the bar. She didn't even want to drink anymore, she just needed something to hold onto.
The line was longer than she had patience for.
"What are you drinking?" someone asked.
Carmen turned, startled. Hannah stood beside her, head tilting.
Without breaking eye contact, Hannah lifted a hand. A bartender arrived immediately.
"Guinness," Carmen said, surprised by how quiet her voice sounded. She didn't even know who took her order, her attention so transfixed with Hannah's eyes.
A glass slid toward her.
"Here." Hannah handed it to her.
Carmen raised a brow in surprise. "Thanks?"
"A peace offering. Or... a thank you, for earlier. Whichever you prefer." Hannah lifted her own glass. "Honestly, I figured you were too refined for beer. Or waiting in lines."
