"what the fuck?!" Jasmine gasps as a massive wave of magic rolls through us knocking everyone around us to their knees even me, Jasmine stays standing with a grim expression.

"vampire magic," I say getting back to my feet slowly and she nods.

"north border has been breached" wolves shout to us in unison, jasmine eyes are now glowing brighter than ever.

"I will take the south and you take the north," I say as Jasmine nods in recognition before disappearing in shadow, I, on the other hand, have to sprint, when I get there it is chaos, wolves fighting vampires left and right, some in full wolf form and some in half changed un natural-looking phases.

I quickly jump into the fray slashing a few vampires with wolf claws, they become wet and stick, the smell of blood filling the air calling to my inner beast.

vampires are hard to defeat, you can behead them, rip their fangs out or do enough damage to the heart, of course, they are also weak to fire and silver hurts them but doesn't kill them outright, but they are super fast, can shadow phase as Jasmine calls it and of course, they have a mean bite, they also have sharp nails, overall, they are pretty equal to us one-on-one but right now we were heavily outnumbered.

my pack were holding their own slashing and biting sounds filling my ears, the snarls of my friends and the hiss of our enemy, I am not sure how much longer this pace can be maintained. another shockwave washes over us weakening wolves but leaving vampires unharmed, I wonder what could be the cause but right now I need to focus on the fight.

"watch your back" I shout as Tom just barely manages to duck a savage swipe aimed at his head.

"Thanks," he says when the vampire is laying on the floor in a scarlet pool.

"I thought you were on supplies?" I ask feeling my hands with the tingle to draw more life from the enemy.

"yeah we were ambushed, I sent the other wolves ahead while I held them back, Jasmine has gone to the north breach?" he asks as we take down three more vampires together.

"Yeah, these bastards timed their attack so we can only assume another border will go before they reveal their game plan" I take down a particularly nasty-looking vampire with a few ferocious swipes and glance around at the carnage, we still hold the upper hand for now but their number greatly outweighs us and I know it won't be long before my pack need a break.

more wolves join the fray I can only assume they had finished with supplies or escorted people safely to the pack house.

"How are we doing?" I ask jasmine.

"outnumbered but holding up, you?" she replies quickly and I can feel through the bond she is fighting hard.

"Much the same, I don't know how much longer we can keep up," I say beginning to feel my muscles burning to change.

"maintain a bit longer I have a feeling they will show their hand if we continue to win," she says and I agree, they won't like us winning even with fewer wolves, I know vampires are literally heartless but I don't imagine they will sacrifice too many of their number for the few of ours.

Tom and I work together to take a few more down, slashes and growls growing louder, I watch as wolves not much older than I fight alongside wolves my father's age.

their number is thinning fast now my wolves seem to be hitting a flow with the ones we are taking down. bodies hit the floor faster and harder as we work, another wave washes over us but we recover quickly, it's like a very intricate dance, careful foot placement and spinning away from attacks, this is what I trained for my whole life, so I can fight strong and hard.

it strikes me this is the first serious fight wolves have had with vampires going back over one hundred years of history and I don't think that is a coincidence, whatever they have planned it must be big.

a more prominent vampire, an older vampire manages to take out one of our wolves but five more are on him before the wolf even tries to stand.

a few more hit the floor, the tide was turning now, we were gaining the upper hand but something felt off, these felt like cannon fodder rather than trained fighters.

Wait, where is Jasmine? A sudden knot forms in my stomach, a suspicion that I am being distracted from something more important.

"jasmine, JASMINE! What's happening?" I don't feel fear for her right now so I hope she's not in danger.

"Their numbers are dwindling, I think we are winning" she replies quickly.

"I'm not sure if I can trust this, it seems too easy," I say in return.

my shirt was torn in multiple places where attacks had been closer than I would like and the majority of my forearms were now covered in quickly drying viscera, I was beginning to tire so I can imagine wolves with less strength than I was not doing so well either, thankfully a few moments later we find reprieve as the greatly reduced attackers call a retreat.

we fall back to the pack house for healing and hydration in preparation for more fighting to come very soon, the house is in chaos, wolves everywhere, young ones clinging to adults for dear life many of which I believe fearing over loved ones who had not or may not return to them, wolves whos mates had fallen were inconsolable, their mate bond severed leaving them broken and vulnerable, this sight like so many before strengthening my resolve.

my father rushes over to me to access the damage, seeing none his eyes darken.

"We have lost few, their losses are greater they are playing us, tiring us before the true fight begins," my father says as though it is an observation, one I share with him, a wave bigger than any before washes over us, wolves call out in pain and fear, the foundations of the whole house shake and something inside me quivers.

"I need to get to jasmine, I think she may be the intended target" I roar tearing from the house, my change happens so quickly that my bones snap into place in a way they never have before but I don't even stumble, I need to get to my mate now!
