"i'm assuming it's your first day of clinicals?" bryn asked, sliding my coffee cup across the table. i got it from my mom a few years back.

it's been tough loved, as it's chipped on the top, and the once bright yellow paint is now turning into dark mustard yellow.

"well, i mean, i wouldn't say it's my first day! but it's my first official day." i looked up and smiled at him quickly. "i've been doing this all summer, and it's about time i get into the hospital for credit."

he frothed his creamer in a glass with his frother; i call it the spinning blades of death.

funny story, he decided to try and curl my already curled hair.

a visit to the er, bleeding scalp, a patch of my hair missing and 400$ bill. bryn realized he wasn't gonna do some shit like that ever again.

i beat his ass in the parking lot.

i sipped my coffee as he looked at me with a look of disappointment," are you sure you wanna go through this right now? i don't think working in a hospital is the best idea right now niara.. you know wh-"

"i'm sure, this has nothing to do with that, in fact i'm choosing this job so THAT doesn't happen again." i said, cutting him off," so, that's not a factor."

he nodded, and sat down in front of me," you're still gonna be my roommate right?"

"oh for sure! i'll just coming home late, clinicals are all over the place, they'll call me in whenever they need me! but i'll always make sure to see you before i leave if you're home, promise."

"you're cooking dinner tonight."

"oh i've been cooking all week, it's your turn."

"not! i got us dinner on tuesday."

"you got us takeout food that tasted like it was left out for three days bryn, never again." i said sternly, darting my eyes to the trash can.

"okay in my defense, it did have two stars... but it was cheap.."

"you know what's not cheap?" i asked, sipping on my coffee.

"what? medical bills?"

"those too, but a funeral, if i would've died because YOU wanted to save money on food."

"i saved the money for rent, by the way!" he said defensively. i rolled my eyes at him as i grabbed my purse and keys off the table.

i loved bryn, but jesus this man was dense. "whatever." i said, flicking him in his temple," im out, love you bryn."

"love you too, have a good day!"

"make dinner!" i called out, as i walked out of the door.

"IM NOT-" i slammed the door shut before he could even respond. walking down the hall in my scrubs i held my brand new badge with excitement.

it's gonna be such a good day.

i walked into the building, and checked in at the front desk, as the man working at the desk introduced himself to me "jamie, nice to meet you."

"niara, pleasure to meet you as well. where's the clinical meeting room?"

"1st floor, room 24. doctor baker is waiting for your arrival."

"thank you so much." i said softly," have a good day."

"you as well." he said in response.

with that, i began the descent down the hall, scanning every door and number on it, looking for room 24.
