The week before school started, Kendall had the house to herself and was bored out of her mind. Hannah, Jade, and Stephanie had other plans so they couldn't come over and her parents were working so she had no one she could spend time with. She'd already gotten her school supplies and made sure she had everything multiple times, she'd read all her books, she'd binge-watched all her TV shows, she'd explored her neighborhood and met her neighbors, so she didn't have anything to do. She thought about going and eating somewhere but she only had four dollars and she doubted it would cover enough to eat something somewhere or go to a movie.
She figured she could just drive around for a little bit, however, she glanced outside her window and had an idea. Grabbing her phone and earbuds, she walked outside and started making her way to the woods. She selected a playlist from her phone and plugged her earbuds into her ears and listened to her favorite songs as she walked on the trail in the woods.
As she walked, her surroundings seemed so familiar and it took her a long moment to realize it was almost exactly like her dream. She faltered for a moment then kept walking.
It's just a dream, she told herself. Nothing to worry about.
She wanted to talk to Dr. Young about them and see what she thought. She'd continued with her sessions with her but anytime she wanted to bring up the dream, something in her shut down. For some reason, she wanted to keep the dream to herself, even from her therapist. She just felt connected to the dreams for some reason. She had no idea why and it was so confusing. Maybe next session she should suck it up and just tell her.
She gave her head a shake and quickened her pace. She needed to get this stupid dream out of her head and focus on school and her friends.
She focused her thoughts on how great it felt to be with Hannah, Stephanie, and Jade again. She was so happy they moved back to Raven City and were going back to her school. She still got nervous about Sterling Manor but reminded herself that the ghost was gone and she would never have to go to that building again. She hadn't had any nightmares for the past two weeks and spending time with her friends and family helped her deal with the fear and anxiety.
She'd also been intrigued by the Patterson family. She was curious about them and wondered why they didn't go out as much as the other neighbors and she wanted to try to get to know Kameron more. She knew it was irrational to be this curious about them and the logical part of her mind knew she needed to mind her own business, but something was intriguing about them that she couldn't put her finger on it. She wanted to know what was going on between him and Jade and if something was going on with them.
She had no idea how long she walked when she noticed that the sun was starting to lower in the sky. A glance down at her phone showed her battery had lowered to twenty percent and she had walked a lot farther than she meant to. There were also several texts from her parents asking where she was. She fired off quick texts to them saying she was making her way back to the house. She started back to her house when she saw a fox was standing on the trail, staring at her.
She froze, not sure what to do. She didn't know if foxes would attack people or not but she didn't want to change it. She knew any animal could be dangerous when provoked and the only thing she could think of was to stand perfectly still and hope it would continue on its merry way.
She didn't know how long they stood there, staring at each other when a silver mist suddenly appeared and swirled around the fox to the point where she couldn't see it anymore. She felt her jaw drop, trying to process what she was seeing, trying to decide if she was dreaming or not.
Then the mist disappeared and in the place where the fox had been stood Kameron.
He gave her a small wave and smiled at her and casually said, "Hey."
She just stared at him, shock and horror coursing through her.
The smile slipped from Kameron's face and he muttered, "In three, two, one. . ."
On one she turned around on her heels and ran in the opposite direction as fast as she could.
