Kendall frowned as she heard something strange and unusual in the distance. Beep. Beep. Beep. What was the noise?
She tried opening her eyes but they felt like they weighed a thousand pounds. She moaned as she tried again, wondering why she felt so crappy. Now that she was awake she was in so much pain and wondered what on earth she did to be in this much pain. Come to think of it, what happened? She didn't remember anything that'd happened before she woke up now.
Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.
Gah, what was that annoying sound? Someone make it shut up!
She tried opening her eyes again and this time managed to crack them open. She winced when a bright light assaulted her eyes and it took several seconds for them to adjust. All she could make out was a bland, white tiled ceiling that was completely unrecognizable to her.
She frowned. Where the hell was she?
"Oh my god, she's awake!"
Kendall jolted at the sound of her sister's voice and Taryn's face suddenly appeared. Taryn started sobbing and reached down to hug her. Kendall winced as another wave of pain shot through her but she managed to lift her arms and hug her sister back. She felt tears of her own slip from her eyes and down her cheeks as relief flooded through her from her sister being here.
Taryn pulled away and called out, "Mom, Dad, she's awake, get in here!"
Kendall winced as her head pounded from the sound of her sister's loud voice and seconds later her parents appeared. She was swamped with tears and hugs.
The doctor arrived shortly after. She peered closely into Kendall's eyes and said, "Hi, Kendall, my name is Dr. Holt. How are you doing?"
"Soar," Kendall managed to croak out. "Thirsty."
"I'll get some water." Dr. Holt pressed the call button beside Kendall's bed and asked the nurse station to bring her some water. "I'm glad to see you're awake, Kendall. You had a terrible wreck."
And just like that, she was brought back to the events that happened before she blacked out. She remembered she was driving to school, there was a terrible storm, it was hard to see the road, a deer randomly appeared on the road, she tried to swerve to avoid it, she drove off the road. . . After that, nothing. No, wait a second. . .
She thought she heard Kameron's voice when she was blacking in and out but she thought she was hallucinating.
Dr. Holt and the other nurses checked over her and her family stood by, watching her with tears in their eyes. Kendall couldn't believe Taryn was there, that she drove all the way to Arizona to be here.
"I know you might not feel like it, but you are incredibly lucky. You had a nasty gash to your head, a few broken ribs, a sprained wrist - lucky given how bad that crash was. And the fact that the young man got you out of the car before it went underwater - again, you're very lucky."
Kendall took a huge gulp of water and asked, "What young man?"
"Kameron Patterson," Mom spoke up. "Our neighbor. He saw you drive off the road and pulled over and got you out of the car before. . ." She pressed her fist to her mouth and started sobbing. Dad pulled her into his arms and she cried into his shoulder.
"Kameron saved your life," Taryn told her. Kendall felt chills travel through her at her sister's words. "You almost drowned and he got you out."
Kendall felt a wave of mixed emotions flow through her. Gratitude, relief, happiness, and curiosity were flooding through her. She felt tears spring into her eyes as the emotion overwhelmed her. She couldn't speak through the lump of her throat and she wondered if that was why she kept having those dreams about Kameron. Maybe it was indicating to her that Kameron would save her life at one point.
"Where is he?" she managed to get out after a long moment. "I want to thank him."
"He hasn't come in today, but if you want, I can stop by his house and tell him you want to thank him," said Mom.
"Thank you."
Kendall barely listened to everyone else as she tried to process everything. Eventually, she drifted off to sleep.
