Ada's POV

"That's so cute," Emmy says as she watches me put the finishing touches to Aaron's birthday present from next to me at the dining table.

"I'm worried it's not enough," I sigh as I slouch onto the chair, looking at the small box and card in front of me, "I mean he got me a bed, and it wasn't even my birthday. This doesn't even come close."

Emmy let out a deep breath, closing the textbook in front of her, "Ada, you could wrap up a baked bean and he would love it."

I shook my head, "Is there anything else I could give him? Preferably something which doesn't cost any money?"

"Head." She responded with a shrug.

"Well, I would do that anyway," I respond with a laugh, "It's a birthday tradition between significant others, is it not?"

Emmy hummed, "I guess so, but you could make it hot. Surprise him at work with it, he has an office, right?"

"Yes," I say slowly, "But that's inappropriate, right?"

"Well duh, that's the whole point."

I shoved her on the shoulder as she giggled. I mean head is a great gift, but there's a part of me that is extremely insecure about this whole thing. Aaron knows my financial situation, and therefore he must be aware that I can't just walk into a store and buy the most expensive watch or aftershave. However, that's what he deserves, and the fact that I can't give him that really grinds down on me. I'm sure he will pretend to love whatever crap I give him, but that's not the point. I want him to actually love it.

"Hey," Emmy pushes me back softly once she realises I'm being serious about my worries, "He's going to love it, and if he doesn't, I'll beat his ass up, okay?"

I nod, attempting to not let the worry overwhelm me, I still had work today. Today was actually his birthday, but since the team has a paperwork day this morning, and we'll probably not be leaving until late, Aaron decided that we will celebrate tomorrow, which is a Saturday.

"How's the college search going then?" I ask, changing the conversation to something less anxiety-inducing.

"Well I think." Emmy responds, opening her laptop to the internet tabs with her options, "The University of Virginia is the obvious choice, its courses are good, and it's close so I could stay at home as you did. Virginia Tech is also pretty nice, but it's less established so I don't think the actual education will be as developed."

"What about Virginia Commonwealth?" I ask, pointing to the university's website.

She shakes her head, "I don't think so. It's a great place but doesn't offer much support financially. I would be able to get a little help money-wise with the other two because I have Colette."
