Before I knew it, I was sliding down the wall, into the real world. Behind me, I heard the woman screaming. "Backup! Backup! He's escaped!"
The sound of people flooding out of the wall and coming after me followed, but I didn't dare look back to see how many. It would do nothing but slow me down. The people following me were constantly shouting. "You let him escape?" "How did he get past you?" "You idiot! Now what do we do?!"
Huh?! Why are they so worried about me specifically? Aren't I just soldier 95754?
I came up to an abandoned-looking department store and desperately started trying to climb up the sides like a spider. After a few tries, I looked back and saw a group of about ten people, Alphas and other Hybrids alike, sprinting towards me. A few of them were holding some sort of weapon. And, unfortunately, they weren't too far away.
I threw off my shoes and jumped on a dumpster. Come on, you can do this. In a last-ditch attempt to get to the top of the building, I finally got a grip on the wall. Yes! Yes!! The group of people had just caught up to me, and were trying to grab at my feet. One of them grabbed the end of my tail and ripped out a chunk of fur. I kicked at them and pulled my body up to the roof of the building. Scrambling to get away from them, I hid behind the concrete barrier on the edge of the roof.
Half of the people in the group yelled at each other angrily, while the other half tried to lure me down. I think one was trying to get up on the building, but it was hard to tell. I grabbed my tail and examined the damage. It was bleeding, but not enough to make me concerned. It would clear up soon. I was a bit upset at how ugly I looked with a chunk of my tail fur missing, but it would grow back. Idiot. You absolute idiot! I cursed myself. I can't just go back now. What did you think was gonna happen when you straight up SLAPPED SOMEONE?! I started chewing on my bottom lip as I listened to the group of people after me.
"How in the hell did he get past you?! Do you have any idea what Akiran's gonna do when he finds out about this?"
"If he finds out. We could-"
Gunshots, followed by the first guy shouting, "Shut up!" rang through the air. "Jesus Christ, do I have to do everything around here?"
"Sir-"
"Shut your Goddamn mouth and let me speak, Darryl! Now, somebody lift me up there. I'll get that kid if it's the last thing I do."
I scrambled to sit up straight as I listened to them start climbing to the top of the department store. On an impulse, I jumped down from the roof and hit the ground running. I sprinted away, as that one guy screamed in frustration. I had no idea where I was going, I just knew it had to be far away from here.
I kept on running for a good while before I started to run out of energy. They were still behind me and I knew it, but not as closely as they were before. Clouds had overtaken the sky, giving everything a threatening appearance. I was scared, and I wondered when they were finally gonna catch up to me. But I still didn't look back.
The wall was out of my sight, and the city had turned into a small neighborhood. I was exhausted, but I didn't stop. I took a sharp left turn down a street and slowed down a bit to catch my breath. Breathing heavier than I ever had before, I collapsed on my knees and sprawled out on the bumpy asphalt. I'm... so... tired. Am I gonna throw up? Not now. Later.
"He went this way!" Someone shouted. I got up as quick as I could and continued on, even though I felt sick to my stomach. It didn't sound like there were too many anymore... One was shot at the department store, and a few probably dropped from, like, malnutrition or something. No, probably just exhaustion. If I were to guess, there were only about four or five still after me.
