We spent the rest of that day at Amanda's house, waiting for any news about Joshua and my dad. I couldn't eat. I couldn't sleep. All I could do was wait. But no news came.

Later in the day, I heard a knock at the front door. At first, I assumed that it was a package or something, so I didn't even give it a second thought. "Adrian!" Amanda shouted across the house. "It's for you!"

I trudged to the front door, still in my pajamas. I hadn't bothered to brush my hair or change into actual clothes. When I got to the door, Miranda and Zaria were standing there.

Before I continue, I should probably describe the twins. Miranda was the older one, and she was super girly. She always wore short skirts or dresses. She was one of the prettiest and most popular girls at our school. Her wavy, black hair stopped at her shoulders and was always styled perfectly. She had beautiful dark brown eyes and caramel skin. We met at 5th grade cheerleading practice and had been inseparable ever since.

Zaria was the complete opposite. Her basic appearance, such as her hair, skin, and face shape, was the same as Miranda, but the similarities ended there. She hated anything girly, and always dressed in 1990's grunge clothes. Her hair was always a mess, no matter what she did with it. Instead of her eyes being dark brown, they were electric blue. She was a little bit shyer than her sister and was in the photography club instead of cheerleading. Both of them had the same mark on their right cheekbone, which was a black crescent moon. Oh, I forgot to explain marks. Marks are basically weird birthmarks that only Alphas have, and each family has a different one. When a male Alpha kisses a female Alpha, she gets his mark. Nobody is really sure how or why this happens, and it has been a mystery ever since Hybrids were created. Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah, the twins were at the door.

When I saw them, I felt my face heat up. I didn't want anyone to see me in the state I was in, let alone my former best friends. "Oh my gosh, we're so sorry," Miranda began. "Did we come at a bad time?"

"Yeah, kind of. What are you doing? I thought you weren't allowed to visit me."

"We heard about what happened with your dad and Joshua," Zaria said. "We just wanted to see you."

"How did you know I was here?"

"We kind of figured that you would be with Amanda," Miranda said. "Do you want to, like, go out for ice cream or something?"

"Hold on," I said. I ran off to my room. I quickly made myself look presentable and then went to the door. "Let's go."

The three of us walked through the city, looking for things to do. It was kind of awkward, especially knowing that if we ran into one of the twins' parents or older brothers, we would be dead meat. Eventually, we found a frozen yogurt place to eat at, and we went in. Once we got our food, we went to sit on the curb outside.

"So," Zaria began, "We have something important we need to tell you."

I looked up from my treat to face her. "What's that?"

She sighed. "Don't call us crazy."

"Um..." I paused. "I won't?"

"Seriously, it's gonna sound nuts," Miranda piped up.

"Okay."

"So please don't laugh or anything."

"Alright, alright! I get it!" I couldn't help but smile at them. I'd missed them so much over the past few months, and all I could do right now was take comfort in their presence.

Zaria took a deep breath. "You know about the war, right?"

"Mhm. How could I not?"

"Well... The Alpha Freedom Movement is planning to surround this city, so no one can get out. We heard our parents talking about it today."
