My head was spinning, not necessarily in a bad way, but I felt like an asshole. I shouldn't have shut Destiny off like that. I should have listened to everything that she had to say, but I needed some time to think. I wasn't doing very well at being productive on my work though. I kept spacing out and thinking about everything that was going on between the two of us. Worse still, the smell of omelettes was drifting up the stairs to the bedroom and it was killing me. I needed to go downstairs and eat something and face my fears. I couldn't be a chicken my whole life.
This was different. The way I felt for Destiny was different, and I think that's what scared me so much. It was so real. It transcended any feelings I had ever had for anyone in the past, because Destiny wasn't just anyone. She was my soulmate. I had to admit to myself that I was falling for her. Hard. Perhaps being with her didn't mean sacrificing our friendship, for we were best friends and so much more. Perhaps that would never have to change, never have to go away. Perhaps everything would be alright if I simply took that step.
I got ready for the day ahead, pulling on a cute camisole and some shorts and pulled my hair into a messy bun. Then, I made my way downstairs. Once I reached the kitchen, awe transformed Destiny's face.
"Woah, Scarlet, you look beautiful. I mean, you always look beautiful but-" she cut off, as her dad shot her a look. Her cheeks coloured and honestly, it was adorable seeing her nervous, especially considering she was the confident one out of the two of us. The bold one. She was never afraid to say what she thought.
I felt relief wash over my face, though, as I realised that Destiny wasn't upset by my prickly mood earlier.
"Omelettes?" Destiny asked, clearing her throat.
"Yes please," I said, my stomach rumbling loudly.
Destiny beamed and went to grab me some, putting them onto a plate. She got me a fork and then placed it down on the table beside her.
I went to sit down, and she reached out to gently squeeze my thigh under the table.
I felt warmth flood to my heart. She gave me butterflies. I felt like a teenager again and it was crazy, but she made me so unbelievably happy, how could I not feel on top of the world?
The food smelt so delicious, so I swiftly ate a few bites. I was right. It was good. Destiny and her father were both amazing cooks, but then I had helped him cook dinner before, so I supposed that made me a pretty good chef, too.
Phillip put on the stereo and recognition dawned on Destiny's face after the melodies of the song began.
"This is the song we always used to dance to!" she said.
"Sweet Caroline?" I said, feeling my lips curl up at the corners.
"Exactly! We have to," she said. "Scarlet," she continued, in a sing-song tone of voice.
I rolled my eyes and grinned, as she stood up from the table and held her hand out to me.
"Alright," I said, taking her hand and beginning to waltz around the kitchen with Destiny, as she held out her hand and let me twirl around.
I released a soft laugh as the two of us continued to sway around the room.
"You two be careful," Phillip said, chuckling before he headed out of the room.
The song soon changed to 'Just the way you are' by Bruno Mars and Destiny smiled.
"I love this song," I said.
"I know you do, baby," she replied.
"It's true, you know," I continued.
"What is?" she asked.
"You are amazing," I said.
Destiny's cheeks went a rosy colour, then.
"You catch me off guard all the time," she said. "You say the cutest shit and it's just... it's too perfect."
"You dance with me. That's perfect. You do things nobody else has ever wanted to," I said.
"Dancing is fun, but even better in your company," Destiny replied. "I'd have danced with you all night at your birthday, too."
Of course, she would have.
Destiny would never leave me. I did trust her in everything that she said.
We were in this together.
I smiled, as I thought over it all.
"We should go out for the day," Destiny said, and I nodded in agreement.
The two of us went upstairs so we could brush our teeth and then we made our way out of the house and to a local park.
Destiny and I sat down on a bench, as the golden sunlight bathed down upon us.
She pulled me closer to her and pressed a hand to my cheek, as she crashed her lips down upon mine.
Someone whistled nearby, which caused Destiny to pull back and hold her middle finger up for a moment.
I chuckled and grabbed her hand, squeezing it gently.
She entwined our fingers together and then kissed me again.
"Honestly, though, fuck those guys. They can leave me to kiss my girl in peace," she said and then her eyes grew larger when she realised what she had said.
"Your girl, huh?" I asked her playfully.
"Yeah, that's what I said," she said confidently.
"Well, I am your girl," I said.
"It would be even better if you were my girlfriend," Destiny said. "Sorry, I really don't know what's got into me."
"I like it," I said.
She smiled and released a soft breath.
"That's a relief," she replied.
I leaned forward and pressed my lips against hers again, tasting the sweet raspberry of her lip-gloss.
