The next day it was time for Destiny and me to return to the hospital, because they wanted to check on me. Ultimately, it was no small thing to be involved in an incident like the one I had been in. I wanted to make sure that my brain was alright and there was no long-term damage, so I was going to have to go, even if I had been alright for a few weeks. Besides, it was probably better to be on the safe side than leave it and something else go wrong in a few days' time.
"What are you doing here?" I blurted, as I caught sight of Chase in reception.
I honestly really did not need to see him, right now. I did not need to see him at all.
"I'm visiting my girlfriend," Chase said.
He had moved on that quick, huh? I supposed it shouldn't have stung as much as it did. I tried to mask the hurt on my face. He did not need to see that.
"Go away, ass wipe" Destiny said. After all, it was Destiny. "She does not want to see you right now. You've done enough."
"Alright fine," Chase said. He didn't seem in the mood to argue, while Destiny did, but I gave her a look and she realised it would probably be a good idea to stop.
Once we had walked a little way away from him, Destiny turned back to me with a compassionate expression upon her face.
"You okay?" she asked me.
"You didn't need to do that, Dest," I told her.
Destiny gave a shake of her head, then, as though she completely disagreed with my statement.
"I will always stand up for you, Scarlet," Destiny promised me.
It felt good, knowing there was one person on this planet who had my back.
"I will always work hard to make sure you are treated right. To make sure you are safe and okay. You're never going to be hurt again, not on my watch," Destiny told me, and her voice held a promise. "Do you want me to draw you some pictures, if you have to stay in hospital again?" she asked, after several moments. Once she had caught the slightly alarmed glint in my gaze, she quickly went on. "I'm sure that won't have to happen, of course, but if it does-"
I cut her off, then, "I'd appreciate that, Destiny. Thank you," I said, with a kindness to my voice.
"I'll always be here for you," she told me again.
I knew that. I knew that I could rely on her. she was such an incredible friend, but she was also far more than that. I supposed it was difficult to explain, but it felt so right.
The receptionist told me where I needed to go and Destiny and I headed in that direction so the doctors could do some more scans on me and check my blood levels and everything else.
Everything seemed to be good, now, actually, but they let me know that I should get in touch if I ever needed anything else, or was concerned about something.
"Hold on a second," the doctor said, before I could leave the room. "We just found something," he said.
Shit.
"There has been some long-term damage," he said. "It's very minor but it could affect your memory from time to time, your attention. It could cause migraines and headaches but... it's nothing fatal."
Now, that was a relief.
"Will it get any worse?" I asked.
"We'd like to think not," the doctor said.
Destiny groaned out loud.
"Alright, that's fine and dandy, but what about Scarlet's future. Is she going to be alright?" Destiny asked.
"At this point in time, we cannot say for certain, Miss White. I'm sorry. I know that is not what you wanted to hear," the doctor said, "But it's how things are."
I rubbed my temples.
Honestly, I simply wanted to go home.
I was pretty sure I was done here.
Once we got back into the hall, Chase was there again.
"I lied before," he said.
I wasn't interested, but I listened to what he had to say.
"My grandmother is sick," he explained. "That's why I'm here. What about you, Scar- Scarlet," he quickly corrected. I supposed using nicknames seemed weird, when you were no longer exactly on speaking terms with someone.
"I'm glad I got to see you again, then," I said. There was some truth in my voice. In an ideal world, I had hoped that Chase and I could be friends, though I supposed that was merely the side in me that didn't want to have any enemies. "I really hope she's going to be alright, Chase."
He gave me an appreciative expression before he brushed past me and towards his grandmother's roon.
I turned back to Destiny to find she was shaking her head.
"What?" I asked.
"I don't buy it," she replied.
"Destiny," I said, with some warning behind my voice.
She just shrugged her shoulders.
"He could be playing the sympathy card," she said.
He could be, but I also had a feeling that wasn't the case, this time around.
Chase and I were already over. He had no reason to lie to me anymore. There were no consequences, so what was the point in saying anything other than the truth?
"I would hate to go through that," I said. "I think losing someone is my worst nightmare. I could never imagine lying about it."
Destiny's eyes flickered with an apologetic glint, then.
"I'm sorry, Scarlet. I shouldn't have said that. I wasn't thinking. I just- I know everything that happened with you and Chase and I struggle to like him right now," she explained.
I could understand as much, of course, so I gave her an understanding nod and continued to walk towards the exit of the hospital, really wanting to get out of there, as soon as I could.
