Eleven- Scarlet

Despite everything that was going on between Chase and I, this wasn't turning out to be too bad a birthday. I supposed that part of the reasoning behind that may be because I wasn't currently spending it with Chase at all. I was spending it with my best friend. With Destiny.

I finished off my glass of prosecco and took another bite out of my linguini. It was just what I needed. When all seemed lost, at least I had food and friendship to turn to.

"It's just not logical to get so upset over a boyfriend when you can be doing things that make you happy instead," Destiny said, as she caught the slightly saddened glint in my eye. "And don't try to argue with me on this one, Scarlet. When we're alone... you seem happier," she said.

I supposed that she was partially right. I was a little happier, but also, as soon as I started to think about Chase and me, I started to feel solemn. I wondered how things could go back to being the way that they once were.

"Stressing about it isn't going to make you feel any better, Scarlet, and I can promise you that much. What can I do to make you feel even slightly better? I will work hard to put a smile on your face," Destiny said.

I gave a small shake of my head, as I felt the corners of my mouth lift upwards a fraction.

"You don't need to work hard to do that, Destiny. You already do. You're the greatest friend that I could have ever asked for," I told her.

The sky was bright outside. A beautiful azure. I realised in that moment that it was really hard to stay upset when the weather was so pleasant. With the weather in England being as changeable as it was, I supposed I should appreciate this moment. I wasn't sure how long it would last.

Under the lights above, Destiny's golden eyeshadow sparkled slightly. She honestly was so beautiful. How was it even possible for my best friend to look like a total goddess? This was a question that I had often pondered, but it was true. She was perfection in human form. At least, to me she was. I don't think anyone ever believes themselves to be perfect, but perhaps we can be perfect to others.

I ran a finger over the scar on Destiny's arm and she looked towards it.

"We should get another cat," I said.

She gave me a look.

"Perhaps a less vicious one," I added.

"You say 'we' as in..." Destiny trailed off.

"Well, when I swear off men and if you don't end up marrying Margot Robbie, then we'll be faced with a perfect opportunity to move in together," I teased.

Destiny grinned in good humour.

"You're funny. I would happily live with you in a heartbeat, though," she said.

"Likewise. Then I wouldn't have to put up with Chase's snoring," I blurted and then quickly covered my mouth with my hand. Had I actually just said that? Damn. Perhaps Destiny was rubbing off on me. I placed a finger to the small heart shaped birth mark on my wrist and exhaled. "I shouldn't have said that," I said.

Destiny released a gentle laugh.

"You should have. It was funny," she said. "Fuck it. You know how you always said you wanted to get a tattoo, but Chase and your dad didn't want you to or whatever?" she asked me.

I nodded. I had mentioned that before.

"Well, what if we go to the tattoo parlour across the road?" she asked me, nodding in its direction through the window behind me.

"I don't know, Dest," I said.

"Come on, Scarlet. You know you want to really," she said with a sweet smile.

God. How was I meant to say no to that?

"Alright. Let's do it," I said.

So, the two of us finished off our bowls of Italian deliciousness and soon it was time for us to stand up. My stomach felt full, but it wasn't as though anyone advised against getting a tattoo after you had just eaten, so over the road to the tattoo parlour we went.

Once we reached it, Destiny walked in first because admittedly, I was a little nervous. This was my first tattoo! Destiny already had some. She had a dove on her ankle and some other birds on her collarbone.

"Let's get matching flowers," Destiny said.

"Yeah?" I asked her.

She nodded, with a happy grin.

I couldn't refuse that smile, once again. So, we went over to the tattoo artist and let him know which tattoos we wanted to get.

I went first, not because I had suddenly gained some courage, rather I wanted to get it out of the way and Destiny was looking as though she felt very tempted to call me a 'chicken' any moment now.

Therefore, I walked right over to the chair, sat down, and prepared for my upper arm to be covered in a daisy tattoo.

Destiny was going to get a buttercup.

They were flowers that we had always seen when we had walked through the meadow together, so they were special to us.

After my turn in the chair, Destiny sat down and readied her arm for her own tattoo. She got her buttercup tattooed on in the same place I had got my daisy, and they were roughly the same size, so they complemented one another well.

A few moments after we had got our tattoos, it came time to leave the shop and return home.

Destiny turned to me with a thoughtful expression.

"Hey, I need to return home," she told me.

"You do?" I asked her.

"Yeah. I need to get some stuff sorted out for your birthday. I'll be with you shortly," she said.
