I am your girl. I could have honestly replayed those words over and over in my head fifty-thousand times and it wouldn't have been enough, but I had work to do.

The two of us continued to walk through the park and Scarlet gently held onto my arm, moving her hand downwards until she reached my hand, which she gave a gentle squeeze.

I had a feeling I'd be up all night again thinking about Scarlet, thinking about how good the two of us could be together.

I mean, we already were good together, but she wasn't my girlfriend.

Yet.

My eyes glanced towards her to catch her smiling as she caught sight of a blue butterfly passing by.

She really was cute and effortlessly so.

I couldn't quit her. She was addicting.

I just needed to steal her heart.

"What are you thinking about?" Scarlet asked me, as she caught me gazing at her.

"You," I blurted.

"Oh," Scarlet said, and a smile danced upon her lips, as her cheeks became dusted with pink again.

"Honestly, you're so fuckin' beautiful," I said.

"Destiny..." she trailed off.

"And don't even try to deny it. You know it's true," I said.

It wasn't as though it was a controversial subject. Her beauty was an objective fact and that was that.

"You're super pretty. Honestly, I always used to think you could be a model," Scarlet said.

I felt my face grow warmer at that comment. Oh, how she flattered me.

"Can I have an ice cream?" a little boy asked nearby.

"Dylan, you need to say please," the lady told him, as the two of them stood in front of the ice cream van.

Scarlet turned to me then with a small smile upon her face.

"You want an ice cream, don't you?" I asked her.

Ice cream was sort of like medicine to Scarlet and me, really. When we were kids, we always used to eat it whenever we were seriously upset about something. It had sort of stuck. Plus, ice cream dates were adorable, and I would not change my mind on that.

"Yes please," she said.

"Well, if you want ice cream then we'll get ice cream," I said.

I was already treating Scarlet like she was my girlfriend. I supposed the only thing really missing was the officiality of it, but I understood why Scarlet had been hesitant to get into a relationship. She didn't want to sacrifice our friendship and she was worried about coming out. I had felt very much the same a long time ago. I could understand the way she was feeling.

The two of us made our way over to the ice cream van and I asked for two regular ice creams with chocolate flakes.

"Thank you," I said, as the guy passed the ice creams over to me.

"You're the best, thank you," Scarlet said, as I gave her the ice cream.

The two of us continued our walk through the park and slowly ate our delicious ice creams.

Once I had finished the ice cream, I crunched down on the cone and then wiped my hands with a tissue, before throwing it in the bin.

"When was your last girlfriend?" Scarlet asked.

In truth, my last girlfriend had been a while ago.

I had a fling a few months back, but it wasn't what I needed.

I needed intimacy. I needed a proper connection. I needed her.

I didn't want meaningless sex.

What I wanted was a best friend.

What I needed was someone I could truly love, and who could truly love me.

"A few years back," I said. "I guess I didn't mention her much."

"No," Scarlet said, shaking her head. "We didn't talk very much when I first started dating Chase," she pointed out.

That was also very true.

"Well, the last girlfriend and I only stayed together a few months before she left me for some guy she met at a games bar," I explained.

Scarlet's eyes shone with sympathy as she listened to me speak.

"I'm so sorry, Dest," she said.

"No, it's fine. She didn't cheat on me. She just said that she wanted to date other people. We were friends for a little while after. It fizzled out eventually, I guess," I said.

Plus, I supposed a part of me resented her for breaking my heart, but it didn't matter for too long.

I had Scarlet. I always had Scarlet.

For a long, long while I couldn't have her, though.

So, I sought out meaningless sex and meaningless connections with girls from bars and hoped that somehow, I would find love.

Sometimes you don't need to look too far to find love. Sometimes it is right in front of you. Sometimes you find love in the eyes of a best friend.

I was falling for Scarlet. I had been falling for her for quite some time, but when she reached out to take my hand in hers again, my stomach did a flip.

It was too late to turn back now, not that I wanted to.

I just didn't want to get my heart broken again.

That was my main worry.

Scarlet wouldn't do that to me, though.

At least, I trusted her with my whole heart.

We had been through so much together. We weren't going to fall apart, now.

"I've never needed too much from a relationship," Scarlet said, after a moment.

I turned to meet her gaze.

The sunlight was causing the honey colour of her eyes to stand out. She looked incredible. Her gaze was mesmerising.

"I've just wanted to matter to someone," she said quietly.

I gave her hands a gentle squeeze, then.

"Scarlet, you do matter. You have always mattered to me. More than anything," I said.

She needed to hear this. She needed to know how important she was to me.

Scarlet gave me a pleasant smile.

"You matter so much to me, too," she said. "Thank you, Dest."

I was at peace with her. It was as if nothing else mattered.
