Mark nodded and walked away. Her rainbow hair swaying with each step she took. Max tugged on my arm.
"Sissy?" Max asked," can you sleep with me in the back with me?" Max rested his head on my arm, his blue eyes looking up at me.
"If you clean up your mess," I glanced down at the table. Max's eyes sparkled as he grab a few napkins the napkin dispenser. He began to clean up his mess. Jeff scuffed with disapproval. I smiled at Max. He was a good boy. Jeff looked at the menu, his hair still covering his face. Max piled the napkins on the spilt soda not even bothering to fully clean the mess.
"Do we have enough money to pay?" I asked still watching Max clean his mess. Jeff cleared his throat. I looked at Jeff.
"There is a special for kids under five," Jeff looked up to see Max,"He will eat free since he is five," Jeff looked down at the menu again. Max was about to protest but I winked at him to tell him to go along with Jeff,"Only one of us can have a meal," Jeff kept looking at the menu. Mark came by and handed us our drinks. I smiled at her, she ignored me. Max finished piling napkins on his mess. I kissed his forehead for a second reword. Max giggled.
"Done," Max whispered as he looks up at the waiter.
"What do you want," Mark rudely asked.
"I would like Sunny Side up and little dude would lik-"
"Pancakes," Max asked," can you also make a happy face with um," Max looked up at me for the answer. I shrugged at him," the blue thingies," he meant blueberries. I giggled at Max's little mind before Jeff cleared his throat to get Marks attention.
"He's four," Jeff continued," she isn't hungry so that will be all," Mark nodded while her pen stopped writing. She repeated the order then looked back at us. Jeff nodded more to his meal since Max interrupt him. Mark wrote again before walking off. Max began to color on his kids menu while Jeff and I didn't talk. The laughter of the small restraint was relaxing to hear. I looked around the restaurant. The two guys began to talk while the women left. I didn't see her leave but she didn't really matter. Max pulled on my shirt to get my attention. I looked down at him. He handed me a blue crayon. We began to play tic tac toe. It wasn't long before our food arrived. Max had his face pancakes while Jeff was handed his Sunny Side up with toasted bread.
"Your meal is coming right up," Mark looked at me. I looked at her with confusion.
"I didn't order a meal," I explained. Jeff glared at me. He mouthed, shut up.
"The meal is from the guy in the tux," I glanced behind her to see this man in the tux. He was looking at me with a smile on his face. We both looked at each other before he winked at me. Mark walked away before I could refuse the order. Jeff glanced at the man before eating his meal again. I felt a little powerful. I crossed my arms and laid back into my chair. Max talked to his food before eating. I looked at the man and waved at him. He waved back. We kept waving at each other. I laughed while he got up. I stood up straight. He came over next to me. The feeling of power came back in my system.
"Hi," he said. His approach was really friendly.
"Hi," I said in a smooth voice. He smiled his killer smile. He was a player. I can tell from his hard eyes.
"Sorry if I creeped you out," he stated. I laughed at his lame joke,"I hope you like your meal," he grabbed my hand and kissed it. I realized that he wasn't trying to be nice but trying to pick up a girl. I pulled back my hand before he could do anything else. I was only sixteen and to have an adult act that way towards me was inappropriate.
"You can leave now," Jeff commanded seeing that I felt uncomfortable. The man looked at Jeff then back at me. He said his goodbyes before walking back to his seat. The women, who was with them when we came in, came back. She said something then they laughed. I back in my seat. Jeff looked back at me before eating a piece of bread," don't worry Emo. Max Rosemary is here to protect you," Max buffed his chest. I smiled at him while cutting Max's pancake into small squares. We didn't speak after that.
My meal came when Max was finishing his last pancakes. I looked at my meal and began to droll. Two over easy eggs with hash-browns ,and a side of sliced white bread.
"Would you like some Maxie?" I asked. Max's shook his head before drinking his soda. I began to devour my food. Jeff took a sip of his drink then grabbed a slice of bread from my plate. Mark came back with our check," can I get a box to go?" Jeff asked her. Mark nodded before walking away. Max let out a yawn before resting his head on my lap. I smiled before eating my last egg. Mark gave me a box and I packed food that I didn't finish. Jeff paid the check.
"Have a wonderful day," Mark yelled as we walked out of IHOP. The breeze was a little cold but didn't bother us. Max's head laid on my shoulder as we walked out. He was asleep. Jeff started the car while I put Max in the middle of the back seat. I wished Max had a car seat so he will be protected in Jeff's old car. I sat next to Max. Just when we was about to pull out of the parking lot, the man in the tux tapped the window. I rolled down my window and looked at him. I wasn't surprised he will come out of the blue to talk to me.
"Here's my number," he handed me his card," if you are in town and feel a little lonely," He winked at me before running back to his little party of friends. I looked down at the card. That once powerful feeling left an was replaced with discuss. I crumbed the number and threw it out the window.
-a few days pass -
We drove town to town. We stop and eat. We stop at a vacant parking lot and sleep for a few hours before driving again. Max and I are tried of entering the car every five hours. Jeff didn't show any emotion about the car at all. Nothing new happened nor worth remembering. I changed out of my blood stand cloths after eating IHOP. We stopped at a gas station because Max needed to pee. That was about it. The red shirt did whoever show to much skin. So I kept my undershirt on. Jeff growled but did nothing to stop me. The ride was really boring. I looked at the window. Nothing but trees or fields of crops. I looked back at Max, who was sleeping. Jeff rested his hand on my knee. I didn't care since I was used to Jeff touching me.
"How much longer," I complained.
"About ten more minutes," Jeff explained.
