The next day Tony was already back at home and in his lab when JARVIS disturbed his work out of the blue.
"Sir, director Fury is on the line" JARVIS says.
"Right on schedule, put him through" Tony replies casually.
"Stark, we need you. Can you come in?" Fury sounds anxious already.
"Sure, what's this about?" Tony asks, acting clueless.
"We found two bodies...Wilson and Barnes" Fury's voice shows off how affected he is by this.
"Really? Where?" Tony tries to act as shocked as he can.
He doesn't need to sound particularly devastated, it's no secret he didn't have a good relationship with any of the two.
"Barnes' safe house location in Europe. I don't even know how he was found there" he sighs.
"And do I have to help with this?" Tony asks.
"I'm not going to make you help, I understand you had your differences. But, as you can imagine, your help would be much appreciated" Fury explains.
"What do you want me to do?"
"Can you please look into any security footage you can find? For some unknown reason we can't find anything, nothing at all" he asks.
"Send me the location, I'll see what I can find" Tony agrees.
"I will, immediately. Thank you, Stark"
"No problem at all. Always at your service" Tony says in a funny tone before they hang up.
Tony doesn't have to look through security cameras or satellites to find any evidence. He knows very well that there's no evidence left, since he wiped everything himself to not be incriminated. At least he can stay innocent in the eyes of S.H.I.E.L.D, for now at least.
What he told them, of course, was a different case. He said not even himself could find anything, which made them sure that they're never going to find out any actual footage. That's why they called him in the headquarters to talk about the mission a bit more, but in person this time.
"Stark, I'm glad you're here" Tony hears Fury's voice from behind him so he turns around to face him.
"Anytime" Tony nods.
"Sorry for bringing you all the way here but there are some things we can't say through the phone" Fury takes a seat and Tony joins him.
"I understand, so what do you know so far?" he asks curiously.
"First of all, the person who did this has pulled a lot of strings to locate them. This was planned for a long time, it wasn't a rushed decision" the seriousness is Nick's voice is clear.
"Wilson was shot at with a high energy weapon and Barnes was strangled" he continues and shows Tony pictures of the crime scene.
Tony takes them in his hands and observes them closely, mostly making sure there were not changes and that they're not lying to him for fishing. If he could, he would smile. He's not feeling any remorse. But instead he keeps his serious face and gives Fury back the pictures.
"Do you have any suspects?" he asks.
"No, we have no one. They were both off the radar, we don't know with who they might have had trouble with. It shocks me that they didn't ask for help" Fury clears his throat.
"Maybe they didn't see the attack coming and didn't have time to ask for backup" Tony sounds reasonable.
"That's probably the case but we're going to keep looking into it"
