Solange typed, staring down at the contact that she made for her father, the two stood hand in hand, getting ready for their turn to play, Belly and Conrad had been beating the opposite team but she'd been in, Steven and Shayla wore similar colors, 'woman of color comes in variations' she thought, "you okay?" Jeremiah whispered, the brown girl looked up from her phone, hitting send as she responded "yup, yea, I'm fine."Her eyes met Stevens, he stood across the yard, his hair messy from playing, it looked like Shayla was talking but he clearly wasn't interested and instead sent a smile across the way "did you hear me?" Jeremiah asked, tugging at her arm "yea, we're up" she mumbled, pulling him behind her.
The girl slightly bend over, her yellow shorts tightening around her legs as she put two hands on her knees, getting ready for the game to start, Jeremiah high-fived her before jumping up and hitting the ball-the first few passes went easy, Solange made it every hit, she played Volleyball in middle school.
Jeremiah did too, until the opposite team started hitting harder, actually trying to win and the blue eyed boy began to plop down on the sand, jump after jump, try after try, they regrouped, facing each other. "Come on Jeremiah, you're like two feet taller than them!" she complained, "i'm trying Lange."
Solange sighed, hearing the whistle blow, her feet tucked into the sand, the volleyball flew towards her and she quickly swung, it going in Jeremiah's direction, instead of successfully hitting it the ball bounced off his hands, hitting the net "bro, what the fuck how could you have possibly missed that, you're six feet!"
The boy froze, sliding his yellow long sleeve off, and throwing it in her direction "i'm not playing anymore" he vastly responded, walking off of the sandy pit "Jere, come on" she uttered.
Steven exchanged off glances with Shayla, knowing that the girl had no interest in playing with her which meant he had to, the boy pecked his girlfriend's lips before trotting past Jeremiah, a deep breath leaving his lips "for fucks sake" was all Solange could fluster out, he smiled, once again, wrapping their fingers together in an off-hand shake, the ones they'd all do before playing a game "try to keep up" he joked, laughing at it.
In turn, she just rolled her eyes, the two worked as a team, being able to keep up with each other the entire time, Taylor looked over at a gawking Jeremiah "you know, if you didn't choose to stop playing i'd almost think that you were mad cause Stevens probably gonna steal your girlfriend" Taylor chuckled, chewing on the mozzarella stick "what?" he responded.
The reality was, Jeremiah knew they kissed, he saw the texts, the longing stares, the way Steven positioned himself around her, and knowing the fact that they are both huge flirts didn't help the situation "you know? Steven looks at her with 'I wanna fuck your brains out' eyes and she looks at him with 'i'd let you any day' eyes?" Taylor re-upped on her message "you look at him the same way" Jeremiah said.
He scooted away from her as the crowd cheered, his eyes followed Solange as she jumped into Steven for a hug, their bodies going into a few circles before he let go, there it was again, the longing stares, he towered over her as if they were gonna kiss until the announcer's voice echoed throughout the speakers "they're most definitely ass" she said, "this is supposed to be a friendly game."
"It's only friendly to the losers, we, my friend, aren't losers, and please don't make that weird" Solange spoke, following behind him out of the pit "me? make things weird? never" he joked.
⁂
Solange laid on Jeremiah's chest, cuddled up under the blankets as her friends sat around, watching the princess bride, his hands ran through her curls, he had no shirt on and her fingers brushed a few feet above his pants line "are you still mad at me?" she mumbled, staring up at the boy. "No, Lange."
"Then why didn't you talk to me after the game?" Solange asked, he grabbed her hand and neither of them said a word the entire car ride home, he hasn't said a word before this either, Jeremiah practically lifted her up and wrapped his arms around her "because you were too busy hugging Steven, and talking to Steven and sitting next to Steven" Jere spitefully spoke, causing her to sit up.
"Jeremiah I sat in the middle, just because he wanted to actually talk to me doesn't mean you get to be pissy" Solange whispered yelled, earning the attention of Angela who sat next to them, before Jeremiah could respond she spoke up "we ran out of chips, Solange, you wanna go to the store?" Angie questioned her.
"Yea, sure."
"I'll go too" Steven shot up, Solange stood up, dropping the blanket, and the blue-eyed boy scoffed, "of course, he's going."
"Jeremiah" Conrad lightly hit the boys shoulder, the two exchanged stares, as if they'd had a conversation before this about the situation, it was obvious at times that he had major jealousy issues, they weren't even together yet "what? it's true" he paused "wherever she goes, he goes, she isn't your girlfriend dude" his words were directed towards Steven.
"Bro what?" Steven responded, being surprised that it was even turning into a conversation, Taylor had gotten to him, once she pointed it out he started to see it more and more, he already knew about the fourth, maybe it was just a drunken kiss, he thought, but now, it was apparent "she isn't your girlfriend either, but those are her words not mine" he added.
"And here we go" Elaine mumbled, Belly and Taylor sat up, pausing the movie and paying attention to the screen, Jeremiah stood up, "Jere- wait, I never-" she almost lied, Solange reached out to grab his arm but he pulled away, leaving the living room "fuck you, Steven!" Lange cursed at the boy, following after Jere.
"So...Chips huh?" Angela mumbled.
⁂
Solange walked down the aisle, throwing random chip bags into the cart "Solange none of us eat organic carrot chips" Conrad uttered, not wanting to bother her too much after listening to her plead her case to Jeremiah in turn to get a closed-door and no response "we're gonna eat organic carrot chips tonight" she responded.
"Okay, but-but are we really?" Conrad asked.
Her phone dinged and she pulled it out, a number sitting in her notifications bar "yes Connie! we're gonna eat the fucking carrot chips" she cursed at him, Conrad stuck his hands up in defense "no need to get hasty."
"Oh my god, Ezra responded! he asked how I was, what do I say?" Solange wistfully asked the boy, he clapped excitedly but his smile faded once he realized what she'd said "what? tell him how you've been Solange?"
"Right, Right, but do I lie or what?"
"Why would you lie?"
"To make him feel bad, duh!" Solange answered his question, typing away, "no, don't lie, just say you're good" he sighed disappointedly.
