They glanced into each others' eyes for a fraction of a second, before turning away from each other. Neither of them said a word. The whole compartment was silent.
Nikhil finally broke the silence by saying, "So who wants to play another game? Or should we call it a night? Its already past 11; for those who sleep early it must be practically midnight for you..." He looked at Rhea when he said that, a sly smile spreading on his face. "And people do want some privacy", he added in a low voice, winking at Varun.
Rhea felt extremely awkward and a little uncomfortable, so without a word, she grabbed the blanket on her seat, and turned away from everybody else, facing the window, and closed her eyes, hoping against hope that sleep would come, soon.
Rhea was drifting off, when something prodded against her foot and she jerked up to see Varun climbing up the mini-ladder to his berth.
"Oops sorry", he whispered. "I didn't mean to wake you up."
"That's ok", she whispered back. "Is everybody sleeping?"
"Yup, most of them are asleep", he said. "I was headed to do the same." He nodded towards his seat.
"Oh, okay, goodnight", she said, a little shy, and went back to sleep again.
"Goodnight." She could hear him climb up and sit on his berth.
She looked out of the window. It was a beautiful, starry night. The moon looked amazing, and the wind was gentle, yet cool, and it felt soft against her skin. She couldn't sleep. All she could think of was the glorious sky, and Varun.
The song didn't mean anything, she reminded herself constantly. He never said it meant anything, and moreover, if somebody offered her a thousand bucks, she would have done the same as him. He was probably thinking of his girlfriend the whole time.
She felt a little jealous. She wondered who this girlfriend was. She must be hot, thought Rhea. She must be one of those tall girls, with a proper figure, with long silky hair, and milky white skin. The kind that looked delicate and sexy, yet tough and athletic as well. Rhea was starting to have an inferiority complex.
Afterall, thought Rhea, only beautiful people get beautiful people.
She suddenly felt a little sick. She never had such thoughts, no sir. These thoughts were demeaning and depressing, she decided. How could she be so shallow? And judge people based only on their looks? Looks don't mean or say anything, her father had always told her. Its the heart and the personality that matters.
Sure Varun was good looking. He was exceptionally handsome, now that she thought of it. But he was way out of her league. And would she base everything on his looks? Already she knew he was egoistical. He was rude. But he seemed like he cared. So what? Even if he was the world's most handsome man, she would rather step in a puddle of poop than date him.
Hold on. Date him? The guy has a girlfriend, she thought angrily. Why would he want to go out with her? She seemed like a mess already. She should stop thinking. She tried to relax her mind. She had been practicing relaxation and meditation since ages now. She sat up straight.
Deep breaths. Close your eyes. Count to ten. Slowly relax your mind. Let go of all the thoughts. Let go of Varun. Varun. His charming smile. His twinkling eyes. His chiseled features.
Rhea opened her eyes in frustration. How could she think in this way? It seemed like physical appearance was the only thing that mattered to her. Was this normal?
She slid from her berth, and decided she would take a walk towards the end of the compartment and sit near the entrance.
The cold breeze and breathtaking view seemed like a perfect antidote for all the stupid things she was thinking.
