"hey! will!" his head turned to see mike approaching him. "hey." he greeted softly, turning his body to face mike, showing that his attention was fully on the raven haired boy. "hey, uh, could i get a ride home?" he asked as he stuffed his hands into the front pockets of his jeans. "sorry, i biked." will shrugged, a disheartened look on his face. he wasn't nearly as good at hiding his emotions as nathan was. "oh- that's okay. thanks anyways." and then mike was off.

will hated mike. he hadn't until recently. once mike started dating eleven he stopped being will's friend and just became her boyfriend. it was like years of friendship didn't matter the second he had a chance with a girl.

will knew he didn't like girls, so he couldn't entirely put himself into mike's shoes. but he knew if he got a boyfriend, he'd still be friends with his friends. so he decided he hated mike, until he was willing to apologize for ditching his friends.

"hey, will." what was with people interrupting his thoughts? he turned to face nathan, giving him a soft smile. "hi, nate." he greeted softly, his eyes scanning nathan's facial features to detect any emotion the boy may show. "wanna come over to mine?" he smiled, only his top teeth showing as he did. that's how he always smiled when it was a genuine smile. "sure! i'll warn you though, i have a lot of homework." will let out a soft laugh as he informed nathan of the situation.

"that's fine, i do too. we could just put some records on and do our homework together." he offered as they began walking. "you're so old school." it wasn't teasing as it escaped will's lips with a giggle, it was said as though it were a fact. "i'm not that old school! cassettes only came out... twenty five years ago." nathan argued as the two started walking towards the bike racks. "twenty five years ago! oh my god." will laughed, shaking his head. "hey it could be worse! i could still be using... i don't know what could be worse." nathan laughed, shrugging his shoulders.

once they had gotten will's bike and attached it to the bike holder on the end of nathan's car, they were off.

nathan's house had always been slightly nicer than will's. not significantly, but just enough. he had a second floor, but the floorboards still creaked and the house looked like it was just barely holding on. "you hungry?" nathan asked, walking towards the small kitchen. "yeah, actually." will nodded, following behind the taller boy. "how about some good 'ol fashioned rum?" he asked, grabbing the bottle of captain morgan. "alcohol?" will's voice trembled as he asked the question, but as his eyes stared at the tall orange bottle, he realized he really, really wanted a drink.

"not without a snack, otherwise we'll get shit faced. call your mom and tell her you're staying over or she'll kill me. you don't have to drink though. i would never pressure you into something."

"fuck it."

neither boy expected will to swear, and nathan hadn't expected him to agree at all. but he shrugged and grabbed two glasses - filling them halfway with ice - while will called his mom. "yeah, i'll be home for sunday dinner i promise." nathan heard distantly as he made grilled cheeses for the boys, knowing the bread would soak up the alcohol and help them not have an intense hang over the next day.

"grilled cheese? what are we, five?" will teased as he sat at the kitchen table, watching nathan cook. "yes. no, bread soaks alcohol and it'll help us not wanna die tomorrow." he explained, giving will a plate with two sandwiches on it.

he waited until nathan sat down with his food to start eating. comfortable silence overtook the kitchen as will wondered what drinking would feel like. he wouldn't have to worry about everything that had been bothering him. not his flashbacks from being in the upside down, not his flashbacks to the pain he felt while flayed, not being what everyone expects him to be. he would just be free of his past, and live in the moment.

the boys were quick to race upstairs after they had eaten, two bottles of captain morgan ready to drink. will sat on nathan's bed as he put on a record, "who made who" by ac dc filling the air. "now i will preface with try to pace yourself, alcohol hits hard your first few times." he told will as he joined the other boy on the bed. "you've drank before?" the question was so innocent, but it made nathan's heart beat faster.

it must just be anxiety.

"yeah, my uh... my mom kind of fucking sucks and it's all i've got to get rid of that." he shrugged, before pouring the rum into the glasses. he handed one to will, before starting to sip on his own. surprisingly, will didn't gag at the taste. didn't even pull a face. he looked so... indifferent.

the boys quietly listened to the album while they drank, occasionally refilling their glasses or changing the record.

with "love of my life" by queen playing, will built up all of his courage, and uttered a few words he never expected to. "do you think being gay is wrong?"
