"what do you mean?" lucas asked as he climbed into the backseat. "vecna wants me." nathan shrugged, his eyes focused on the road as he made the short trip to mike's house. "why does vecna want you? he only wants people who have trauma!" lucas huffed, trying not to cry at the prospect of losing someone else. "lucas..." dustin muttered, noticing nathan stiffen up after that was said. "i just, i want to get through the day, and figure out a game plan after school. with steve and robin." he declared as mike climbed into the car. "a game plan?" he asked, confusion laced in his words. "vecna wants him." eleven piped up from her seat in the trunk. "you're being hunted by vecna?!" he asked, turning to face nathan. "yeah, but i just want to get through the day. i have queen on speed dial." he sighed, tapping his headphones around his neck.
nathan walked the halls with his headphones on, queen blasting through them, causing heads to turn and glare at him, but he didn't care. he would rather be safe than be respected by his peers.
at lunch, he paused his music and sat at the table with his friends, unwilling to eat. "i'm too anxious, will, i appreciate it but i can't stomach anything." he sighed, giving a thankful smile to his boyfriend. "why are you freaked out?" kasey asked as she sat at the table. "my dad's fighting to see me, my mom isn't down for it." he quickly lied, a tight lipped smile on his face. well, it wasn't entirely a lie. if vecna succeeded in killing him, he'd get to see his dad again.
"mm, your mom hate him?" she asked, a curious look on her face. "no, but she hates me, and knows i love him." he shrugged, biting down on his lower lip.

"steve, i need you to pick up robin and meet me at the wheeler's. it's an emergency." nathan huffed as he spoke. "what? what's wrong?" steve asked quickly. "just get her and get over here. he's back." nathan told him, before hanging up the phone. "is he coming?" dustin asked anxiously, standing up from the couch. "yeah, he's on his way." nathan nodded slowly, pressing play on the cassette player but keeping his headphones around his neck as he nervously paced the room. "i don't know why we need them. we aren't kids anymore!" mike complained. "and stop pacing! you're making me nervous!"
"i literally sped to get here, this better be important." steve complained as he and robin entered the basement less than twenty minutes later. "vecna is trying to kill me." nathan sighed, no longer pacing and now facing the adults. "what?" robin breathed out, her eyes going wide. for a long time, nathan and his family lived next door to her, she had babysat him until he was eleven, every sunday evening. she still saw him as that little kid who she protected for a lot of her teen years.
"we knew you were the only ones who fought vecna in the upside down last time, so we needed your help with a plan." will told them as he moved to stand next to nathan. "well, what our plan was max would distract him, eddie and dustin would distract the bats, and we would kill him, but he knows the plan this time, so we need to come up with a new one." robin explained, leaning against the door behind her.
"or we don't need a new one. we can go through with your plan, but have el keep him from killing me long enough for you to get his body." nathan explained, turning to face eleven. "would you be up for that?" he asked softly, a smile on his face. "we could try, but i tried that with max and he overpowered me." she explained, fear in her eyes. "okay, but that was right after you got your powers back, right? they should be stronger now?" will asked, turning to face his sister, who nodded slowly. "this plan sounds great." steve said slowly. "if you want to die! how do we know it'll work?" he asked, his arms crossed across his chest. "i want to go with you to kill him." lucas said slowly, an angry look on his face. "mike and i can distract them while will protects nathan and el. i think this plan will work." dustin explained, standing to his feet. "no, i think we'd need more people." steve sighed, shaking his head. "erica and kasey." nathan quickly offered.
