I was glad when my mom let me go for the weekend. She didn't know it was the Thompson's party, otherwise I wouldn't stepping foot in New York.
She still held the grudge, despite Viv's regaling of that night where she painted Michael a hero. Even if Michael had saved me from the kidnap, carried me through burning coal or even died instead of me for Bruce to let the twins go, my mom would never forgive nor forget.
I couldn't blame her. But I also wasn't her. I'd forgiven Michael a long time ago, because he'd proved he's reliability again. Nevertheless, my own phobias would never let me enter a long term relationship. Not with him or anyone.
I wish I could explain all that to Michael. But the moment was gone, and time had passed. And now I was waiting with Rose and Vivian for his new girlfriend. It was an anxious wait.
Despite it being a Halloween party, no one was dressed in costumes. Dark colours, bold slashes of red lipstick and gaudy masks. But no superhero or custom costumes, just couture pieces.
I myself had picked a dark red gown from Evora's collection. Rose had come in a deep teal, mimicking a peacock. Viv in her signature shimmery gold, looking heavenly. We were a sight to behold, our faces hidden with matching masks. And dressing up with them had definitely made me feel much better about life in general.
If you had friends like Jerry, and the girls, people who made life better, then I think the suffering can take a backseat.
"There he is. Man of the hour."
Michael strode into our sight, each step careful, dressed in a black suit, a pinch of white peeking from his coat pocket. As much as he stole my gaze, it was the person next to him that caught all of our attention more. The girl whose arm was wrapped around his.
The first thing I noticed was the sheer blonde of the hair, the ivory colour of it. It might have seemed fake, but I knew it wasn't. The hair was swept to a side and flowed over her shoulder in smooth waves.
It seemed to match her saintly white dress with lace detailing that oddly looked like a wedding dress. The long sleeves was her touch on everything she wore. Though it seemed like a personal statement, the story behind it was much darker.
I met her honey eyes as they stepped closer. I saw the guilt in them. I looked to her side, where Michael's green eyes were already watching me.
My face stretches to accommodate the fakest smile I could muster.
"You've got to be shitting me."
Rose had managed to get words out in the absolute confusion the three of us were in.
"What the hell is going on?" She ripped off her mask, followed by Viv. All of them were bare faced now, but I didn't dare.
My smile fades as I realise I had the right to be a little confused. Michael clears his throat and shares a glance with Katrina Wallin, his...girlfriend.
