Music played as the girls danced on the makeshift floor of the yacht. I sipped the bubbly champagne and smiled.

I don't understand how they were able to dance, on high heels, on a boat that shifted with every wave. I wasn't sea sick, but I definitely wasn't going to push it.

Spinning from the sight, I walked towards the rear, clutching the railing overlooking the deck. Thankfully no one seemed to want to leave party central. I had the spot all to myself.

Far in the distance, back on the shore, the city lights twinkled back, as bright as the stars that flickered in the clear night sky. I release a deep sigh and lean against the cool railing.

The salty sea breeze lifted my hair and brackish smell filled my nostrils. My nose wrinkled. I guess a boat ride is where cut my ties with the ocean.

"Not a fan of the yacht?"

I whirl around, facing the person who spoke.

"Dean, hey. Yeah, I'm not used to it."

"Give it another hour, you'll get used to the drifts." He steps closer and leans back on the railing. "What's going on in your head?"

I shrug, "Nothing and everything. We've come a long way. It seems like we could take on the entire world sometimes."

"But we don't need to," he reminds me.

"I know. I'm glad we don't. Because honestly I don't have the energy for that yet."

"Good thing we're team. All of us."

"Michael might have other ideas. He thinks I'm a self-saboteur."

"Are you?"

I go silent and that answers his question.

"I think at some point in all our lives, we all are. I was, and that only led me to lose Scott. I think he's concerned and he's never felt that type of concern before. You know he's terrible at human emotions and communication."

I let out a snort, "You'd be surprised. He's more of a talker than people give him credit for."

"And you're the only one who'll know it." I bite my lip. "I'm not saying that he's entitled to you because he's bared a new side just to you. Whether you guys pick each other, is up to you guys entirely. But he's just a concerned friend, just like we all are.

"No one is blaming you for any of what has happened. So you don't need to self-sabotage or isolate yourself all the way in Medfield."

"That is not entirely up to me, contrary to popular belief."

He tilts his head, making his naturally red hair fall across his forehead. I was glad he abandoned the black dye. "The great Camille bows to her mother?"

My mother had fussed over me spending another New Years in New York with my friends, but Jerry, like a true soldier, convinced her to let me go.

"You should meet her. She'd knock some sense into your brain." He chuckles and his eyes go to something behind me, and he nods.
