Two weeks pass by, with multiple discrete calls and letters sent before Kat finally gets through to the right person.

The contents of those two letters explained a lot and then some. Annabelle's pregnancy, the abortion, the fall out... All it stood to show was how one person should never wield that much power. But it also was a god given opportunity that had to be used.

"Cam?"

"Yeah? Sorry I zoned out."

My mother rolls her eyes and continues grating carrots. "I asked if you visited Eric, your father?" I refrain from rolling my eyes as well.

"No."

I'd given her the same answer the last time she asked, Sunday night after I returned from New York.

"Does he not want to see you?"

I groan, "Mom we talked about this. He can't make requests to see me. I have to go visit him." And after the court hearing, it was obvious he didn't want to speak to me for a while. He waved me off and that was enough.

"Fine, fine. So what do you want to do for your birthday this year?" Her tone was screaming excitement.

She didn't know about my birthday bash last year. Turning 17 had been one of the best nights of my life. But a repeat of the crazy night wasn't what I wanted this year.

"To celebrate with the girls." Her face dropped. "No big parties and stuff, you know?"

"What about Jerry and your friends at school?" His friends, not mine. I had no friends here.

"I've celebrated my birthday with Jerry for 16 years. I doubt my 18th is anything special."

"But it is! And I'd like to be there too." She pouted but it only irritated me.

"It's just another birthday mom. If it were really up to me, I'd not celebrate it at all. After all that has happened, it doesn't feel right. And I don't want it. Okay?"

I play the traumatised card, sue me. I just wanted her to stop.

"Fine, okay. Better tell that to Jerry then. He wanted to throw you a party." I narrow my eyes. I'd already talked to him, and he knew I'd be uncomfortable.

She turns around, focusing on cooking dinner. I sigh internally and get up to help her. I was going to need to do all the buttering possible to continue my plan anyway.

"So you're really going to Sweden?"

"Mom can't exactly stop me. Perk of turning 18 is the freedom, right?"

Jerry frowns, "So you're going after your birthday?" We sat on the curb after a basketball game at the park. I run my fingers over the basketball tucked under my legs.

"Nothing is confirmed yet. We need an excuse and Viv has to cement it before Kat can get her brother to agree. I need an excuse Mom can't argue against and then we're set to go."

"I think its best you go after. While she's overbearing as hell, last year was hard on her. So she'll throw a fit if you go off and celebrate without her."

"But I'm not celebrating! I'm trying-"

"Cam, I know. But she doesn't. And she won't understand."

He was right. Mom would never understand. She didn't see the benefit of helping others. She would only see me being selfish and leaving her alone on my birthday. Yeah it was all fucking stupid. But that was my mother.

"Fine, you're right."

He blinks at me. "Wow, you're actually listening to me." I shrug.

"You have some worth advice on rare occasions." Jerry punches my shoulder hard enough to bruise and I stomp on his black and white converse as revenge.

"So what's the actual plan for your birthday?" I rub my shoulder and sigh.

"Endure whatever she has planned, and leave the very next day. You still need to buy me a gift of course. And whatever party she insists you're planning can happen after I come back."

"Until you find me a gift that's better than a New York souvenir, you're not getting anything."

"Oh come on, that Empire State key chain is like the real thing! With the pictures I took, you can see all the views too. I wouldn't let you miss out on the views."

"You're so thoughtful," he deadpans.

I chuckle and get up, tossing the ball to him. "Come on, let's go break the news to my mother."

"I thought nothing was confirmed?" He rises, and stretches his long dark limbs.

"This is my mother. We need to hint at the news weeks before the actual thing. We're just gonna lay the base."

"We?"

"You're my human shield. It's really all you're good for if the basketball thing doesn't work out."

"Great." He scoffs, "Can't say the same thing for you though. Cause whatever your actual plan is, I don't think it's working Sanders. You won't be able to afford me soon."

"Oh we'll see Fisher. One day I'll own your ass."
