Dantine's Pov
I was sitting in my shop waiting for any work to come in, and Morrison showed up with a little girl.
Morrison: "I have a job for you."
Dantine: "Yeah, what?"
Morrison: "This little girl is the last heir of the Lowell family's fortune. Your contract's to protect her."
Dantine: "Why would demons be going after her?"
Morrison: "No idea. Your job is to just escort miss Patty here to the family mansion by 6 pm tomorrow."
Dantine: "That's all?"
Morrison: "That's all."
Dantine: "Then I won't do it. I don't like dealing with kids, and I hate protecting targets. Can't Lady or Trish do this? Besides, I've got a pizza on the way." In years past, I'd had a huge tab to pay to the pizza place, but thanks to Vergilia's advice with money I'd fully paid it off.
Morrison: "There's some good money in this one."
Dantine: "You know I hate dealing with this kind of job."
Morrison: "Come on. This isn't a hard job. Just stay with her until she gets there. I'll throw in some extra for your troubles." I sighed. I could use some money, but I didn't want to deal with this. He pulled a coin from his pocket. "How about this, heads, you don't take it, tails, you do."
Dantine: "Fine." He flipped it. I lost. I groaned and headed out after finding out where this place was.
Patty: "You're not much of a gambler, are you?"
Dantine: "Shut up." We got in the car and left.
On the road, I felt a demon nearby, so I pulled her hat down and shot it. Something was off about this kid. The demons were after her for no apparent reason.
Patty: "What's wrong with you? What was that all about?"
Eventually we were on a train and got attacked again. It was all a bunch of lesser demons, but still more than should be after a little kid.
We checked into a hotel for the night and Patty told me her mom disappeared at a young age. She was being chased by a demon so she gave Patty up to keep her safe.
I woke up later to find Patty gone, and I ran down to the front desk.
Dantine: "Where's my daughter?"
Clerk: "Daughter?"
Dantine: "The little kid I checked in with." Something about him was familiar, but I couldn't put my finger on it.
Clerk: "I don't know what you're talking about, ma-am." I saw a poster and felt a demon, so I shot it. It turned into a butterfly-like demon and fell to the floor.
Dantine: "Ok." He put a gun to my back.
Clerk: "You should know I know all about you."
Dantine: "Then you know that won't be enough to kill me." Now I recognized him. He was the demon that stole the wish-granting demon's mask years ago. "Now where's Patty?"
I forced him to lead me to where she was and dealt with the demons there. I tried not to traumatize her too much, but it wasn't that easy given how many demons there were.
After that I brought her to the address I was given for the mansion. A demon was attacking everyone inside, so I killed it.
I was furious to find out that Patty wasn't the real heir, and that the real one had contracted me as a decoy. Another reminder that humans were sometimes just as bad as demons.
I took Patty back to my place and had to decide what to do with her. She received compensation for everything that happened, but I didn't want to have to deal with a little kid. Then I had the idea to have my sister take care of her until we found her mother.
Dantine: "Patty, how do you feel about my sister babysitting you until I find your mother?"
Patty: "Why? Am I too annoying?"
Dantine: "Well, I don't know how to deal with kids. She does."
Patty: "Fine." She pouted and looked away.
Dantine: "I'll ask her." I sent another letter to ask Vergilia if she could handle that for a while.
Vergilia's Pov
Y/N came in and handed me another letter. I opened it and was surprised what she was asking me.
Y/N: "What's it about?"
Vergilia: "Dantine had a job that required her to protect a kid, and now she's trying to find her mother. She's asking if we can take care of this kid until she does."
Y/N: "We probably can. How long?"
Vergilia: "She doesn't know."
Y/N: "I mean, I don't see a problem."
Vergilia: "I don't either. I'll send her a letter telling her we can."
Y/N: "Alright. I'll tell Nero. How old is this kid?"
Vergilia: "I don't think my sister knows. It doesn't sound like she's older than six, though."
Y/N: "This should be easy enough to deal with." I sent a letter back telling Dantine we would do it.
Dantine's Pov
I got Vergilia's letter and told Patty she said yes. She was annoyed at me for just getting rid of her until I told her that my sister kept her place cleaner than I did.
Vergilia picked her up and she came by boat to Fortuna. After that Lady came in.
Dantine: "What do you want? If it's a job, thanks but no thanks."
Lady: "Why not?"
Dantine: "Because your jobs never pay that well, and they're always terrible. Besides, I don't owe you a dime anymore."
Lady: "How about a bet? I get the 8-ball in and you take the job, no questions."
Dantine: "Done. If you lose, you pay me 2,000 in cash and leave me alone."
Lady: "Done." She got it in.
Dantine: "Alright, fine. You should really be a hustler. You'd make more cash, don't you think?" The job turned out to be as terrible as I was used to. I still walked away with a good amount of money, since Lady wouldn't have been able to do it without me.
Vergilia's Pov
I took the girl to my shop. I found out her name and also noticed she talked a lot. Now I saw why Dantine didn't want to deal with her. Still, she turned out to not be that much of a problem. Y/N mostly ended up being the one to deal with her.
Dantine's Pov
I kept hunting more demons, with a large number of them pretending to be humans, which they hadn't done much before. Maybe since my sister and I were killing so many of them, they'd started changing their approach. It didn't help, though. I could still tell, so they didn't give me much trouble.
I also finally killed a demon that had been hunting me since I was a kid. Little did I know what was coming next.
