Chapter 5: The Bloodline

Kai was silent for the first few minutes of the drive. He sighs heavily and looks at me briefly.
So I think it's important to start at the beginning Leia. For you to understand just how different my pack is. Our legacy is a unique one. Our story is not like most other packs. See it happened thousands and thousands of years ago. There was a man who was deeply in love with his wife. So much that he would do anything for her.. And she loved him just the same. They live together and loved one another for many, many years. But then one day, his wife fell deathly ill... The man was so desperate not to lose her. He made a pact with a demon during a blood moon. The pact would allow the man to bring back his wife from the dead. Because she was his mate. His soul mate. However, the pact required the sacrifice of a living creature. To which, the man chose a wolf. The Goddess of Creation found out. Furious, the Goddess cursed the man to forever walk the Earth as not a human, but a monster - part man, part wolf. When he returned to his village his people rejected the beast he had become. He was banished into the depths of the woods where he would stay for years. But eventually the man grew lonely and wandered back to the village. It was there he realized his curse was not that he was a hideous monster. But, that he was cursed to turn other humans into half human, half wolves. Driven by his loneliness, during the first full moon of the year. He turned the entire village into werewolves. This was the first pack of werewolves ever to roam the Earth, and he was their leader. Their Alpha, a monster driven mad by his loneliness. The other werewolves feared him and his power, and that is the story of the first werewolf. They call his bloodline the Ultima.
We are the descendants of the first pack. That's why our warriors are so strong. I am the alpha because I'm a the direct descendant of the first werewolf. My unique trait is that my eyes glow red when I am in full wolf form. And unlike most werewolves I can also half shift. Others refer to this as being a Lycan.
So now you know about the Hunter's Moon Pack. And our bloodline. Anyone who becomes part of our pack must complete a blood ceremony in October with the pack during the full hunter's moon. And then again with me in January during the full wolf moon.
Oh. So you mean not everyone is born into your pack.
No sweetie not everyone is born in to the pack. Otherwise we would all be cousins. LOL!
Several people find their mates in other packs. Or even during tourist season in Landrum.
We try to keep the bloodline as pure as possible so we don't mate with humans. Humans don't usually survive pregnancy with a were. Or at least die trying to give to birth a werewolf. Not that one of the pack members can't choose a human mate. I'm not saying that at all. It is just discouraged. We try and stick with the philosophy of do no harm. You know given our history.
Any other questions about the pack?
Yes. Ummm well you know Joan's predicament with the curse. Does she fall in the category of possibly unmatchable/ unmateable? Although I like it here. I would not subject my sister to live someplace where she couldn't find happiness. She wants a large family one day I wouldn't take that from her. Not even for the chance to feel safe again.
No. Joan's situation is unique. She is a werewolf. Therefore could find a mate and have pups. And Zara even said there is a possibility of her getting her wolf once she is 18. If she completes the pack ceremony.
Yeah but first she has to wake up. Leia says looking down at her hands so Kai couldn't see the unshed tears in her eyes.
Leia have faith in the goddess. Though we don't know all her plans. She would not let you find help, if her intent was to return Joan to the spirit world.
Although she can be revengeful. The Goddess is not cruel.
I know. I guess with all that I have been through in the last 3 months. I kind of expect the worst. If good happens then it's a true blessing.

Here we are. The best pizza place in town. Pulling the Jeep into a parking spot. Kai comes around to open the door. Thanks! I say as I brush past him.
Inside we are guided to a back booth away from all the noise.
I order lemonade. Kai orders a beer.

Kai slaps my back.
Shit! I sputter trying to catch my breathe. I guess now is as good of a time as ever.
OK so what I have pieced together is that my mom was part of the Full Red Moon pack. Alpha Kyle had been watching my mom for years. The year she turned 18. He requested for my grandparents to allow him to pick my mom at his chosen mate. Six months of not finding her mate she finally agreed. The night before her Luna ceremony, my mom and her friends went out to a bonfire party a couple of towns over. She ended up meeting my father her true mate. She immediately went back to Alpha Kyle. Explain that she had found her true mate. And that she had planned to complete the mating ceremony with him and leave the pack. The alpha wasn't having it. But one of her friends helps her leave. Alpha Kyle being furious after not being able to find her when she completed the mating bond with my dad. Started killing pack members two a day for every day he didn't find her. In the end he ended up massacring half his pack before the royal council stepped in. Years later the remaining pack members found my mom and dad on our farm. Me and my sister escaped as their brutally murdered my parents. And we remained on the run until Joan got sick. And that's how we ended up here with you. We left Oklahoma 12 weeks ago. I felt my parents' bonds completely severed two days after the escape. I'm pretty sure they are no longer alive. Our plan was to head east to South Carolina and then head north into Canada. I don't want any harm to come to any of you. And I understand if you would like for us to leave.
No Leia I would not like for you or Joan to leave my pack.
In fact if you would like I would like for you guys to officially join as members.
Also I heard earlier you had questions about someone calling you Luna? The day that I met you I felt the mate bond. If you choose to be my mate then by doing so you will be the Luna of this pack. But the choice is yours alone. There is no pressure and I am not asking you to stay as part of the pack because of this. But whether you choose me or if you choose my pack, we are more than willing to be your family. No harm will come to you or Joan if you decide to stay. You will have the protection of this pack.
I would like to talk to Joan about staying here. Please give me time to get to know you before I decide about the whole mate and Luna thing.
Take all the time you need. But let's get one thing clear. I will call this whole thing off if you order pineapple on your pizza. LOL!
Well then call it off because I'm definitely ordering a ham and pineapple pizza. It is my favorite.
Kai throws back his head and laughs. Oh Goddess what have you gotten me into?
For the rest of the evening Kai and Leia chat back-and-forth about where Leia came from and what Kai's duties are as Alpha. Little do they know Blackrock's chosen mate is passing through town and overheard Leia's story.
