"So, when did you and Declan fuck?"

I spew the water I was drinking all over the table in front of me, thankfully not spraying any on Mack sitting across from me. She starts cracking up, but I'm absolutely mortified. My boss not only just asked me about my sex life, but she also witnessed water nearly coming out of my nose. Great job, Nova. Real fucking professional.

"I have no idea what you're talking about." I do my best to act clueless, but I know my wide eyes and red cheeks give me away in a heartbeat.

Mack grins, "Nova, trust me, with the way you two were looking at each other this morning, it's pretty obvious there's a history there."

I cringe. I was completely shocked when I saw him waiting outside the arena this morning, and even more shocked when I realized the other coffee he was carrying was for me. A big part of me wanted to walk right past him and ignore him, but I can't lie, the gesture sent butterflies through my stomach. I still stand by my pact to stay professional around him, though, because we absolutely can not go there again. No matter how charming Declan is, the wreckage he left in his wake wasn't worth it last time, and I know that it wouldn't be worth it this time with even more on the line.

"We never fucked."

"But you both want to."

My face grows even redder, if that's possible. "No, I don't. I guess I can't speak for him, but I doubt he wants to either."

"Nova, I'm sorry, but you're delusional. The man brought you coffee this morning. And I know for a fact he wasn't even supposed to come in until later for their team workout."

I don't even know what to say to that because I'm still clinging to the comfort of denial, so I chose to ignore Mack's prodding and look down at my menu. Mack just laughs and follows my lead, looking over her own menu as well.

As I pretend to look for what I want to eat, I can't help but think about what Mack said. If it's true, Declan showing up early just to give me coffee is enough to make any girl swoon. But I know him, and that's why it puts me on edge more than anything. I can't help but contemplate what his ulterior motive is, because he has to have one. There's no way he brought me coffee because he felt like being nice. Declan isn't nice.

After a long day, I finally make it home, shutting my apartment door behind me and immediately running to my bedroom to change into sweats. After lunch with Mack, where she thankfully refrained from any more teasing about Declan, we returned to the arena to look over a few more contracts which took longer than we anticipated, so I didn't make it home until seven in the evening.

I quickly change and make my way back out to the living room where I find Imogen and Lennon sprawled out on the couch waiting for me.
