Every time I see her, I cherish her more and more.
My father always says that he knew the moment he met mom that she was it for him, and when I was younger I would ask how he knew. He would say there's a feeling he gets when he looks at her, it starts in his chest, and quickly spreads through his entire body, until he would feel warmth all over in her presence. He described it as being home.
Being in the NHL, I haven't been anywhere long enough to make it feel like home. Even New York, which I've lived in for years now, has never had the same feeling of comfortability as my childhood home, until now.
I watch as Nova walks into the arena, her cheeks rosy from the biting wind whipping around the city with winter threatening its arrival. I love the way she looks in moments like this, not knowing anyone is watching her, no outside force stressing her out. Gone is the crease that seems like a permanent mark between her brows. The feeling of being home washes over me, and I remember the other night when she slept over.
Watching her body and mind relax as she slowly drifted to sleep, I couldn't help but utter the words I've been wanting to say to her for a while now. I love you.
Usually those three words are ones that scare me, but not when it comes to her. It's easy to love Nova, even when she tries her damned hardest to push me away. She had already been sleeping, but something in me couldn't stop them from slipping out of my mouth, like I finally needed to say it out loud and confront the feeling head on.
I can't help but walk up to her before she makes her way back to the conference room. She spies me quickly, giving me a shy smile as she pauses and waits for me to catch up with her.
"How's my beautiful girl?"
She laughs, "Your girl, huh?"
I saw the way she looked at me when I called her my girlfriend at the club, but that's only because she doesn't know she's my girlfriend yet. I plan on fixing that little problem.
"Yup."
"You're awfully confident in yourself."
I wrap my arms around her waist, tugging her close to me, "Because I know you're mine, just like I'm yours."
Blush covers her cheeks as she looks away from me, and I can't help but chuckle as I plant a kiss on her forehead.
"Wait for me when your meeting is done."
She gives me a soft smile, "Okay."
I squeeze her tight before letting her go, knowing if I make her late she'll give me hell, and for her late is not being fifteen minutes early which means she only has two more minutes to make it back in time.
I watch her walk away before going into the locker room to put on my gear for practice. Coach makes us do drills for hours, each of us cursing his name the whole time as he laughs from the sidelines. With our game coming up against the Bruins this weekend, I know Coach wants us in the best shape as possible. By the end, it feels like I just got out of a pool with the amount of sweat coating my body and clothes.
