Winter and Qibli's eyes widened, and Winter asked,

"Can you walk?"

"It'll be fine."

"No," Winter asked again firmly, "I'm asking you if you CAN walk not if you can TRY to walk."

Qibli smiled softly and Winter felt weak. It was such a smile that radiated of warmth and trust. And Winter knew that if Qibli smiled them a million more times he'd have crows-feet smile lines when he was older. Once was more than Winter could ask for, but he knew he wanted to see more of them.

Other dragons wailed and groaned nearby as their shock wore off. Fire began slowly clawing its way from its temporary containment within the cave, licking away at the walls leaving only a charred mark in its remanence. It was as though a starved fire-breathing dragon had just been released.

And it was going to make a meal of the dragonets

"Moon!" Winter shouted, crouching beside her as his joints finally sprang into action. he unfurled his wing to help her up as she coughed. Her eyes were bloodshot. "Are you okay?! What was that?"

In the corner of his eye, he spotted Qibli making an effort to stand on wobbled and bloodied legs so he could reach Winter and Moon.

"Qibli!" Winter barked over the roaring flame, "Stay there! Let me take care of this!"

He added gently, "You've done enough. We'll get help!"

Beside him, Moon's weight lessened as Kinkajou hurried to lift her other side, tears running down her face in worry.

Winter and she met eyes and he nodded appreciatively.

Moon's eyes were glazed over in fear, looking at nothing in particular as she was deep in thought.

A Mudwing bounded out of the hall to announce they were going to get help.

"Let's get her away from the fire!" he suggested to Kinkajou

"You got it!"

The two of them dragged Moon as far away from the fire as they could, syncing their movements carefully. Kinkajou was stronger than he'd thought she would be. Stronger than he'd thought a Rainwing COULD be.

"Where's Icicle?" someone cried

Winter felt his insides freeze and squeeze painfully at the words.

He hadn't even thought about the possibility of her being in the cave. But it was true - her Winglet had history with them next.

He couldn't lose another sibling.

"She's alright, she wasn't in there." Qibli's voice answered, slightly muddled. Instant relief rushed over Winter. He would never let himself live himself down if he was responsible for both Hailstorm and Icicle's deaths. As long as he was nearby, it had to be him.

Winter stood lightheaded and dazed, taking frigid deep breaths until he remembered that there were still other dragons that needed help.

The three of them suddenly jumped clear of a smoking trail narrowly missing an orange blur as it barreled into the flames.

Peril had come. And brought hope instead of death on her heels.

"Let me help you with that." A voice offered from behind him. When Winter turned and immediately recognized his Seawing clawmate, Turtle.
