A/N: The man, the myth, the legend returns... in the middle of the night
"And I almost feel alive, in your arms"- Apple Pie, April Fools
"I think I'm just lonely, y'know?" Blue was talking to Eevee. Something he did frequently, "I really don't know why else I'd be sad all the time. I picked up my act a lot since you hatched, and now I finally settled into an actual job, so I don't know what else it could be." He mumbled, chewing on a berry. After another year of deliberation, Blue had dug out the jacket and card Red had given him and walked over to the Viridian gym. The League had finally accepted his application about two months ago, and even though Red was gone and had been for three years, Blue was now the Viridian gym leader. Blue wasn't necessarily happier, but getting a job that required him to leave his apartment, and prevented him from moping around all day had helped to ward off any serious depression. It had also helped his pokemon from what he could tell. Eevee sat in Blue's lap, paws resting on his chest as he lounged in bed, just talking. "I heard from an interview someone did with that Ethan kid that he had met someone on Mt. Silver. He described Red, Eevee." Eevee trilled at this. Despite never meeting Red, after hearing about how much Blue talked about him, she probably knew this was important. "I... think I want to go look for him." Blue sighed, "I know it's kind of irresponsible since I just became the gym leader, but I want to see him. I want to know he's doing better. I want him to see that I'm doing better. I want him to see how much better I've become. Maybe that's selfish." Eevee licked Blue's chin and Blue smiled at her. "I probably shouldn't think about him as much as I do. I have you and the rest of the team, after all. Plus, Daisy would kill me if I went off into the mountains on a wild Farfetch'd chase..."
"Ee-vui!" Blue continued to stroke Eevee's soft fur. He jumped as his phone's ringtone went off. Why was Daisy calling him in the middle of the night?
"Hello?" He picked up.
"Blue, are you busy?"
"Not particularly. Why?"
"You know how Red just disappeared for 3 years?"
"Yeah, nobody really knows where he is."
"I do. He's on the doorstep right now, kid." Blue paused at this, I was just thinking about him?
"Daisy, you're pulling my leg."
"I'm not. He's wondering where you are."
"Tell him I'm dead." Blue snickered, he was joking- mostly.
"Blue, he's been listening to me talking to you. Telling him you're dead won't work, bud."
"Uh- send him over?" Blue glanced around his mess of an apartment.
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah, stall for me for a couple minutes, though."
"Fine, fine." Daisy hung up abruptly, as always. Blue sprung up.
"Eevee, can you help me clean up a bit?" Eevee nodded, "Okay, you just take the clothes on the floor, and put them in the basket next to the desk." Blue crouched down, and gave Eevee a pet. He then got up and began picking up trash. After around 20 minutes of picking up trash, wiping dust off of things, and vacuuming, there was a knock at the door. Eevee scampered over to the door and began scratching and meowing(?) at the door. "Eevee, calm down." Blue picked her up and opened the door, "Hello?"
"..." Red waved. He looked... good. Rough around the edges, but Blue could make out well defined muscles and he had become about half a foot taller. Not fair. Red dug around in his bag and pulled out a piece of candy. He offered it to Eevee, and she reluctantly accepted the treat. Blue smirked, Red was like this with every Pokemon it seemed. He'd do something to flip a switch, making whatever unfriendly or grumpy pokemon in his vicinity warm up to him immediately.
"Don't feed her too much, you'll spoil her." Blue teased, petting Eevee's soft fur, "It's pretty late, do you want to come in?" Red nodded and followed Blue in. "So, where did you run off to for 3 years?" Blue set Eevee down on the kitchen counter, and instead of hopping off the counter, she just jumped onto his shoulder. "Uf-" Blue stopped himself from staggering, but yeesh- Eevee was getting heavier.
"...Mt. Silver."
"Huh?" Blue turned to look at Red.
"That's where I went."
"Oh. Why'd you go up there?"
"...It's quiet and nice.."
"Hm." Blue grunted.
"..." Red stood behind him in the kitchen.
"Do you want to have a drink and sit down? Also, I hope you have a hotel room because it's pretty late."
"I don't have a hotel room. I was just going to camp." Red's tone was unreadable, his voice was deeper now but still had a gravely sort of quality- presumably due to lack of use.
"Only you would camp over setting up a hotel room." Blue sighed, rolling his eyes.
"Sorry."
"Well, don't apologize doofus." Blue swatted at him, "If it's more comfortable, you can just stay with me. I can book a hotel room for you in the morning." Blue would've been slightly more insulting, but he was rusty when it came to insulting anybody but himself, and on the off chance the insult landed, Red would've acted like an injured lillipup for the rest of the night.
"...Thanks..."
"It's nothing. Have you been flying all day?" Blue prompted and Red nodded, "If you need to pass out, you can just fall asleep on my bed. I'll just sleep on the couch tonight." Blue sighed. Red smiled, wrapping Blue in a hug that caught him off guard. "Uf- I missed you too, bud..." Blue murmured, face flaring up as Red pressed him into his chest. He was partially panicked, partially relieved. Red was so warm... his breathing was soft and soothing. It had been so long since he had been hugged by anyone. Arceus, was he getting emotional over a hug? Red had always been physically affectionate, regardless of how mean Blue had been so a hug shouldn't have been a surprise, but it was a nice surprise. The two just stood there, Blue began to question if Red intended on letting go of him. Red eventually released Blue from the hug.
"..." Red had a sheepish smile on his face.
"Yeah, yeah..." Blue smirked, "Are you just gonna fall asleep?" Red nodded. "Welp, G'night then." He was tired. Eevee still stood stubbornly on Blue's shoulder, and was chewing on a loose tuft of his hair. Blue grabbed a can of soda, watching Red sit down on his mattress. Red looked on edge, glancing around the messy room. While Blue had cleaned up, the room still had a cluttered, dusty feel to it and Red always noticed things like that. Blue sighed, cracking open the can of soda and trudging out of the apartment. The warm lighting of the flickering lights in between each apartment made him a tad uneasy, but he needed a few moments to gather himself. Eevee nuzzled his cheek, and Blue couldn't help but smile, "I need to stop moping around, huh?" He murmured, sipping the soda. Blue was exhausted, and felt like crying. He had always been a bit of a crybaby. "Y'know, I'm not sure how I feel about him. I've been thinking about him for the longest time, but he feels so different. I feel different. It's awkward." Blue took another sip of the soda. Eevee licked his chin, and so he gave it another pet. Blue finished his soda and went back inside. Red was still awake, and rolling around in the mattress. Blue sprawled out of the couch, setting the empty soda can on the coffee table. He pretended Red wasn't there, still unsure of how to interact with him. After several moments of listening to Red shift around, Blue sat back up, "Are you okay?"
"...mhm..."
"I have some melatonin if you need it." Blue mumbled.
"..." Red paused. Blue got up, grabbing Eevee. Red liked hugging things, it wouldn't surprise Blue if he still fell asleep with a plushie.
"Do you need a cuddle buddy? Eevee's pretty good at that." Red seemed like a stantler caught in the headlights. He nodded slowly and Blue lowered Eevee onto the bed. "She prefers to sleep on the bed anyways. If you wake up to her sitting on your face, I'm sorry in advance but it's not my fault." Blue snickered, walking back over to the sofa.
"... Good night..." Red mumbled and Blue smiled.
"G'night."
