Jayden's stiff and quiet walking up the front steps of her and Raj's old high school. But I do all I can to make her feel better. We were close to staying back as a weary Jayden kept changing her mind throughout the day. But she gave in at the last minute, Brittany excited with her decision.
However, the moment we step foot inside, Jayden makes a complete turnaround. Or at least the imitation of one. Because although she's sociable and bright, her true dark feelings cripple me. But I won't let my emotions come through like the sulky Raj, holding onto his love who stands worried beside him.
My guardian introduces me to people as her fiancé. And that's especially so whenever they comment on the unmissable ring she got me recently. The silver band, adorned with extravagant diamonds and other dazzling stones, was an anniversary token of our seraph-guardian union that was a little over a year ago. Wearing it on my engagement finger and listening to lies she's telling now gives me a special high. But what's the point in getting excited over it when our relationship is only stagnant water?
I, of course, am still tortured by the truth moments later while Jayden gets a moment of peace . . . or so she believes. Because as she notices a dumpy, tacky, and boisterous woman approaching us, she goes cold and quiet. I quietly ask who the person is for her to whisper back, "Brooklyn, my biggest bully, the one Raj mentioned earlier. She picked on me a lot because I was gay." Jayden snickers, "But now she's married to a woman herself and has a nappy ass family."
"This kid right here," Brooklyn guffaws as she's before Jayden, "this kid was one of my closest friends!" She then directs at Raj with his nose in his phone, "And him too!"
"Yep." He gives her a weak smile, not looking up even once.
"Y'all guys still remember all the good times we had together, right?"
When he doesn't answer, Jayden does so for the two: "Yeah, Brooke, we definitely do." She tries getting Raj to laugh with her, but he refuses to lighten up. With his girlfriend unhappy about it, she gives me sad looks I hate to return.
Standing here, I sense that none of these idiots remember anything they've done to Jayden. But I learn a few new things about her that don't surprise me in the slightest. And two of those things were her perfect attendance, or how she was most interested in psychology class.
But what's frequently brought up are her grades. She's told me a few times she was an A-plus student, but I'm now realizing how great she was at tuning things out . . . After being mistreated both here and home, how could she still function properly? I guess it's always been in her what could never be in me: mighty ass perseverance.
I'm stuck drooling over her for the millionth time when Brittany taps me out of my head. "Hit up that hella lame bar with me, Ophy? I need something. It doesn't matter what right now!" She points to the skimpy collection.
"Yes. Of course." I nod while taking her hand that she holds out for me. And as we leave, I wave Jayden goodbye who's caught up listening to some 'sob' story that's an obvious plea for her money.
"This place is crawling with fake bitches." Brittany rolls her eyes as she orders some fruity cocktail from the bartender. "And I'm practically dying right now!"
"Dying because of fake people?" I raise a brow, smiling, "I mean, they're jerks, but I'm not dying because of it—"
"Not that! Because I want to scratch this fucker so bad." She whines about her thigh that has a new lion tattoo us four angels got the day before Sabbath week started. But Jayden, of course, had to get hers done by a celestial with image imprinting powers because of her impenetrable skin. Raj was the one who came up with the idea to get them and I was eager to get it on me—my body was just too plain.
Brittany slaps at her upper leg that's partly covered by her skirt instead of scratching it. People stare at her like she's a maniac but at least she's feeling better. But as she watches her boyfriend from across the room, I notice her fickle expressions. Thus, I ask through a pout, "You're worried about him, aren't you?"
She deflates. "About possibly getting engaged to that amazing, sexy stud, yes." The lovers first talked about it months back and still do to this day. And though nothing official has yet to come out of it, I know Raj is planning something. He's recently been getting my opinion on Brittany's jewelry style and I'm super excited.
"But why, Britt? What's got you worried all a sudden—"
"Me not getting through to him, Ophy. Isn't that like . . . important?"
"But—"
She blathers, "What if he got cloned, and I fucked his copy instead of the real him by accident? What if he got super, super pissed, you know?"
I raise a brow at her absurd scenario, shaking my head and laughing, "Really? Are you high or something? You've gotta be."
Brittany gives me a weak smile. "For real though . . ."
"I assume you're talking about not being able to cheer him up here, which is stupid. Because one: this place is crap. And two: this is the first time you haven't even been able to at all, at least that I know of." I hug her. "If it was your five millionth time, then I'd be concerned."
"It's the first ever." My best friend nods.
"Then you've gotta relax." I peel back to look into her eyes. "It's going to be okay—"
"You're only optimistic because you've always got Jayden whipped into shape," she snickers, "you lucky bitch."
"Me? You're calling me lucky?" I burst out laughing for everyone nearby to gawk at us again.
"Okay, Ophy, okay!" Brittany chuckles, "We gotta stop acting weird or people will think we're crackheads!"
