"Hey, Amelia! A pack of strawberry banana gum for my math assignment!"
Amelia nodded and scribbled the work for the boy, Dave Peaks.
Dave grinned at her. "Thanks."
Amelia nodded and motioned for the next person in line. She worked as fast as she could and tried her hardest to get everyone, collecting her money and food in her pockets.
A few minutes later, the bell rang and Mr. Walker stepped into the classroom. The last few people in line groaned as they raced to their seats. Mr. Walker was known for giving out detentions for not being in your seat at the start of class.
Mr. Walker smiled. "Good afternoon, class."
"Good afternoon, Mr. Walker!"
He continued to smile. "I have gotten the list which contains the list of students who were accepted to The Gifted And Talented Academy."
The class fell silent.
"Let me tell you who they are. But first, remember, only two people from each school can be accepted. If you make it in, congratulations. I do not know if anyone in this class has been accepted, however, since you are my first period class. Now let's see..."
There was pure, tense silence.
"One person in this class has been accepted! It is... Amelia Astair! Congratulations!"
The class cheered and clapped. Everyone was grateful for her homework help and tutoring services. Amelia blushed as she stood up and picked up the acceptance letter and application form. She beamed.
"I'm so glad I made it! Thank you!" She bowed and laughed with pure joy and happiness.
Mr. Walker whispered in her ear, "I'm so proud of you, Amelia."
Amelia felt even happier. Mr. Walker very rarely complimented people, even the hard working and attentive Amelia. She felt as if she had really earned this.
Amelia pulled on her backpack and sped through the hallways, happy to tell her friends what had happened. She sat down at their regular table and pulled out her sandwich, chips, salad, and juice, waiting for her buddies. When they finally came, she was bursting with anticipation to tell them.
"Look!"
She squealed, handing them the papers. As the girls read them, they grinned. Amelia was enveloped in a big bear hug.
"It is so cool, right? And thankfully, I don't have to leave for like, a year. It's for high school! And maybe even college!"
Her friends congratulated her as they ate their lunch. Amelia felt to happy, she wanted to jump up and down. Her school had never had an advanced program for kids like her, so she had always been bored learning stuff she already knew.
Sometimes she dozed off or read a book. She would get in trouble for this until the teachers discovered how smart she was. The principal sympathized with her, saying they had no current available advanced programs. She had to "hang in there."
Now, Amelia would be surrounded by geniuses like her. She wouldn't feel left out. But she would still miss her classmates and their gifts. Oh well! She was going to a nationally recognized school!
Amelia went through the rest of the day with high spirits. As she went home that day, she prepared to tell her family the news. But when she got there, she was shocked at what she saw.
