Jason stared at Amelia. "What?" The policeman tuned into their conversation and Amelia mouthed the words, 'tell you later.' Jason nodded and winked at her. Then he looked out the window and fell silent. "Amelia, I will take you back to the orphanage," the policeman interrupted their thoughts. He yawned as the sun slowly began to rise and dawn appeared on the horizon. "Aren't you tired?" She asked in a silk-like, dreamy voice. "It's so early in the morning... Wouldn't you like to just close your eyes and sleep?"
There was no response, and Amelia, hoping for the best, leaned forward to check on the police officer.
He was fast asleep.
"This is our chance!"
"I don't know..." Jason said hesitantly.
"It'll be fine," she assured him impatiently. "Let's go before he wakes up."
They stealthily forced open the car doors and escaped from the police officer just as the first rays of illuminating sunlight beamed atop them.
"HEY! GET BACK HERE, PUNKS!"
"We have to go!" Amelia fiercely whispered, a sense of urgency apparent in her voice. "Come on!"
Jason reluctantly followed her quick pace as they left the small neighborhood. Their home. The only place they'd ever known- River Oaks Bend.
Home.
"Where are we going?" Jason asked, a pang of longing hidden in his voice.
"That's what makes it fun," Amelia replied. "I have no idea."
