Sage
One week had passed since Logan had kissed me. We never stopped seeing each other at night, but he never kissed me again. I was in my room, studying on my white and gold desk when my sister barged in.
"Hey, sis! I was looking for you everywhere then a maid told me you were here."
I didn't look up from my desk as I rolled my eyes, "You should've come here first. Where else would I be on a Thursday evening?"
She froze and opened her mouth dramatically, "How dare you! I thought you would be in the garden looking at the sunset. It's beautiful today."
I looked up. She was right, I could see it from the window in front of my working area. The sun basked my room and held it warmly and softly. Some dust particles were flying everywhere in my room. They looked like magical diamonds. It reminded me of Logan and his soft sunkissed skin. Like mine. I smiled and then remembered to answer my sister.
"It is, but I have some homework due tomorrow, and I need to make sure there are no errors in it."
She walked with purpose to me and yanked me out of the chair. "You study way too much for your good. I have a costume for you to try on."
That was when I noticed the fabric in her hands. She reached for it and unfolded it. I gasped.
"Nina, what is this? I will not wear it." It was a vampire costume. "It would insult Logan."
"No, it wouldn't. He would see how pretty you would look in that black maxi dress. And look! It has bat details at its ends." She practically jumped from excitement and then she winked. "Like a traditional vampire would look, you know?"
I was shocked. My heart was hammering in my chest. I had entrusted her with this. "Are you listening to yourself, Nina? Why would he need to see how good I'd look as a vampire? I won't ever be one. I despise their nature–"
"Yet you're going out with one." She was glaring at me with so much hatred in her eyes, that it surprised me. "I am too."
I got up from my chair even though I wasn't sure I could stand up with this punch to my stomach. What the actual hell was she talking about? My hands were getting sweaty as each heartbeat came faster than the last.
"Did I fucking stutter sis? Yes, I am going out with Thomas and I think we are fated mates. Just like you and Logan, but unlike you guys, we aren't ignoring it. Y'all are pathetic lovers–"
"He's obviously using you!" I threw my hands in the air, exasperation tugging at me as I looked up at the ceiling. I was still trying to wrap my head around the fact that I was dating a vampire and then my sister went and did the same.
"Why? Because a royal cannot like me, but they can like you? Why? Because you're studying and I am not? Because you have a future and I don't? Because you have psychic abilities and I don't? That's precisely the reason why he isn't using me." Her eyes were determined as she glared at me.
I didn't know how to respond. Shock rooted me to my place. Fear and dread coiled around my stomach sending their venom as they sunk their teeth in my skin. I never thought she was holding the only things I had against me. She knew damn well that this future she was talking about wasn't what I wanted to do while she was free to do whatever she liked. My job would help us stay on our feet once we flee. Something warm inside me turned into a burning fire of rage as I looked my sister dead in the eyes.
"The fact that you have been holding all of these thoughts inside your head and never decided to have a mature conversation about it shows me exactly why fate chose me to carry special abilities instead of you. I have always been there for you and this is how you reward me–"
