Chapter1: Bloodsucker

Mya's POV.

"We interrupt your program to bring you the president. President Alvarez has an urgent message regarding the latest break out in bloodsucking creatures."

The screen went dark for a second then a background showed up on the screen. The inside of the white house came into view. But instead of the president appearing on the screen, someone else did.

Someone with red eyes.

"Hello, Americans. As you have noticed, the United States of America is no longer run by senseless humans. We vampires have taken over power and authority. Any and all humans will be sold to vampires as slaves. Any humans who fail to follow the new rules and obey will be assassinated immediately. The rules will be posted shortly, all across the country. I am president Grimes. And I am here to stay."

The TV channel went black then lines streaked across the screen, static taking over.

I grabbed my shotgun from beside the recliner and got to my feet. The windows were boarded up, the electricity turned off. The heat had shut off from the lack of works running the heat and air conditioning. But it didn't bother me.

I had bigger things to worry about.

I grabbed my bag and pulled it over my head. Inside it were some large bills, some silver bullets, and a stake, one I'd fashioned myself. I didn't know much about vampires except what my fiction books said and that wasn't helpful at all. But it was something to work from.

I locked the front door as I stepped outside and scanned the yard in front of me. Hardly anyone was outside this time of day. The sun had just come up over the horizon and everything was covered in a bright yellow glow. It was the safest time of day. As long as I made it back my sunrise, I was safe. Alive.

I ran down the steps and turned onto the sidewalk. I headed down the hill and stopped at the four way intersection. If I turned right, I'd leave town and go toward the farm houses. If I went left, I'd go toward the lake and the rich people's houses. If I went straight, I'd go into the city. And if I turned back, I'd go toward the different suburbs. Most of my friends lived in the suburbs. Almost all of them were dead. I only knew of a few who were truly dead. Since the outbreak of vampires, newspapers stopped running, the internet was turned off for humans, and social gatherings were nonexistent. I had no way of communicating to anyone other than myself.

Which got lonely at times.

I went into the city and dodged a burning car, it's tired flattened. The streets were vacant. An occasional person walked by, or ran by in some cases, but never made eye contact with me. They probably hoped I wasn't a vampire. Which I did the same for them.

I went into the local grocery store and tried finding anything that hadn't already been taken by looters. Though the vampires were smart: they took all the humans into their control before looting or fights could break out.

I grabbed a bag of chips and a can of soup and put them into my bag. It felt weird to not pay for things but who would I pay? I checked the registers for money but all were emptied already. The vampires must have beat me to it.

Nervously, I looked around me, seeing if any vampires were around. It looked like I was by myself.

I walked toward the exit and saw someone standing in the entryway. The person, who appeared to be a man, was wearing black track pants, a black jacket zipped up all the way with the hood up, and sunglasses on. On closer look, I saw that it was a vampire, not a human.

I wasn't exactly scared of vampires, per say. But they were intimidating and a lot stronger than I was. Being afraid of them was in my nature.

I swallowed back the fear and bile that had rose in my throat and cocked my gun, aiming it straight at the vampire.
