Chapter15-Say Your Goodbyes

Michael's POV.

Again.

"I'm going to kill him. I swear it." Jack growled, his voice cracking.

Beside him, and thankfully not me, Alex whimpered as the guard tightened the silver chain across her stomach. The smell of burnt skin was heavy in the air and it made me want to puke.

"You betrayed your father. You'll be lucky if he doesn't kill you." Eddie said.

"He was keeping a girl hostage in his basement. There was no way I could stand aside and let that happen."

I knew it was best to stay out of the conversation. I was guilty of the same thing Alvarez was doing. Mya had every right to never want to see me again. I hated to admit it but Alvarez and I were a lot alike.

I could feel Eddie watching me but he didn't say anything.

Mya trusted Jack. In a weird way, she trusted him. I didn't want to give him a reason not to trust me because he would convince Mya not to trust me and everything I'd worked for with her would be gone.

And if she fell in love with him, I knew my life would be ruined for good.

The door to our right opened and Alvarez stepped inside, his hands clasped behind his back. Mya wasn't with him.

I struggled against the chains, wincing as they cut and burnt my skin. "What did you do to her?"

Alvarez smiled but was quiet for a few moments. When he spoke, he lowered his hands to his sides and I noticed a small remote of sorts in his hand. But I didn't know what it did. "She's sleeping."

"If you hurt her-"

"You'll do what?" His tone was mocking and it drove me nuts. But there wasn't anything I could do. He knew it, I knew it as well.

I growled, hating that he was getting the upper hand. It was bad enough that I was chained to the wall under his control. I didn't want him to have more power when it came to Mya. That meant she was truly in danger. And it nearly broke me.

He slid the remote into my hand then took a step back. "That controller is linked to a shock collar. There's no doubt in my mind that you know who it belongs to."

I narrowed my eyes and squeezed the remote. The device started to bend but only a little.

"If you break the remote, the collar will go off until the battery in it dies. And lucky for us, the battery is brand new."

I growled again and had to tell myself the remote controlled Mya to stop myself from breaking it. "You're sick. She can't protect herself against you. It's an unfair fight."

"Who said it needed to be a fight?" He took the controller back and his hands returned behind him. "If you really wanted to keep her safe, you would have turned her before I got my hands on her."

"You said that any vampire who takes another's property will be killed."

Alvarez laughed. "The rules do not apply to me, Michael. And if I recall correctly, you came to take her from me just a week ago."

I stayed quiet. How he knew I was there to rescue Mya astounded me. Jack was the one who was taking her to safety. Did he not know Jack was involved?

Alvarez cleared his throat and headed for the door. "You are sentenced to death, Michael. Say your goodbyes now. You have ten minutes.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Eddie watched me with wide eyes, surprised at the turn of events. Sure, we all suspected we'd be killed but it wasn't for the reason Alvarez made it out to be. He was powerful and he was vindictive. He could have killed us just for fun. But he was killing me for breaking the rules he created. I shouldn't have been killed but if he wanted me dead, I'd be dead.

"He has no right-" Jack started.

I cut him off. "He's the president. He can do whatever he wants."

"Mike, don't do this to yourself. You're letting him win." Eddie said, his look sad and pitiful.

"I can't fight back. None of us can." The chains had too much silver in them for us to try and break free. And even if we did, Alvarez's guards were watching us. Any suspicious movement would result in death.

"This isn't like you, man. You never back down from a fight."

"This isn't a fight, Eddie." I said, my anger coming back. I was more frustrated at myself and Alvarez than at him and I hoped he knew that. "This is Alvarez getting what he wants. He's killing me and keeping Mya. There's nothing we can do."

"I'm sorry, Michael."

I looked past Eddie to see Alex, watching me. Her expression wasn't annoyed or anything that would annoy me. It was genuine and something I desperately needed then.

Before any of us could say anything more, the door opened and Alvarez walked in. Handcuffed to him, was Mya.
