Chapter14-It Hurts
Michael's POV.
Mya was finally starting to trust me more. She even wanted me around more, which was surprising coming from her. If I left a room while she was sleeping and she woke up before I got back to her, I could feel the panic in her from wherever I was. I hated to see her in so much pain. But I was glad I was the one able to comfort her.
She was curled up on the bed, asleep, the TV playing a movie in the background. An unfinished bowl of soup sat on the bedside table.
Her hair had fallen across her face, covering up her eyes. Even without seeing them, I knew they were moving; I knew she was dreaming.
I sat down beside her on the bed and moved her so her head was in my lap. She stirred, rolling over so her body was facing the pillows. Her hair fell from her face and her eyes met mine.
"How'd you sleep?" I asked.
"Fine." She mumbled.
I watched her, something I was doing a lot more of lately, and said nothing. There wasn't anything to say. She was just as silent.
She sat up and, with hesitant moves, ran her thumb across the dark circle under my left eye. "You're hungry." She didn't mean it to be a question but she looked at me like she wanted an answer.
"Don't worry about it." I didn't want her to be afraid of me because she knew I was hungry. No, starving.
She moved her hair away from her neck, watching me as she did so. She didn't have to say anything for me to know what she was implying.
I couldn't do it. I couldn't hurt her just because I was hungry. She wouldn't trust me ever again if I hurt her.
I moved closer to her and put a hand on the other side of her neck. When my fangs pierced her skin, she whimpered but I knew it was only from the break of her skin.
Her head tilted back, her eyes shutting, and a hand grasped my bicep. As the pleasure of the bite got to her, and myself, her fingers tightened and she moaned.
Not wanting to hurt or scare her, I released just as both of us were reaching our peaks. She looked slightly saddened but relieved, at the same time.
"Are you alright?"
Instead of answering me, she got up and walked to the bathroom. She inspected the marks in the mirror and a flash of a smile appeared on her face though it disappeared just as quickly. Her fingers moved over the small scars before she let her hair fall back over her shoulder.
I couldn't help myself. I smiled at the slight thought of her actually enjoying the bite. It wasn't often that humans liked it. Most were scared of us and losing their lives that they never let themselves enjoy the pleasure the bite could give them.
When she turned to walk back into the room, her cheeks turned bright red as she saw me watching her. Nonetheless, she walked back and sat back down on the bed.
The door opened and Eddie ran in. And the look on his face said that his news wasn't good. "Alvarez is here. And he's pissed."
"Does he know she's here?" I asked, trying not to freak out. Inside, though, was a whole other story.
"Either he does or he just stopped by to tear the house apart."
I glared at him. "What about the others?"
"Alvarez doesn't want them. He's not even touching them. He only wants her." Both our eyes fell on Mya and I hated that she was so freaked out and scared all the time. I just wanted her to be safe. I wanted her to be happy for once.
Tears filled her eyes but they never fell down her cheeks. She looked at me, her eyes so sad and scared. "What do we do?"
Just as Eddie was about to speak, the female vampire downstairs screamed at the top of her lungs.
Eddie cursed under his breath then took off.
I got to my feet, instructing Mya to do the same, and pushed the bed in front of the door, closing it in the process. I pulled Mya onto my back and opened the only window in the room. Only Eddie would have a window in his room.
I jumped out the window and landed with a tiny thud on the grass below. I took off running, not even looking back to see if anyone had seen or heard us.
Something sharp hit my chest and I lost my balance. The sudden stumble sent Mya and I rolling down the steep bank we were headed toward.
At the bottom, as our momentum died out, we separated and I landed on my back. As I inspected the pain in my chest, I realized it was a silver star, like the kind cowboys used in old western movies.
I grunted as I pulled it out, blood coming with it. I tossed it aside, getting it as far away from me as I could.
As I did so, I saw Mya lying just a few feet from me. She was laying on her side, tears rolling down her cheeks.
I moved to her side and reached to pick her up but she whimpered and pushed me away.
"Mya, it's just me. We're getting out of here."
"It hurts." She whispered, her voice so broken. I'd never wanted to help her more in my entire time of knowing her.
"I know. It's going to be okay." I didn't think it would be. Alvarez was powerful and strong and if he wanted Mya, a weak human, he'd stop at nothing to get her.
Carefully, I lifted Mya into my arms, cradling her close to me.
"Put the girl down."
I growled and turned to see Alvarez leaning against a tree, his arms crossed over his chest.
"You shouldn't lie to her, Michael. It's not good for your relationship."
"I'm not letting you take her."
"You won't share with me? Your parents must have never shown you manners as a child."
"You're not taking her."
"So it's going to be like that, is it?" Alvarez snapped his fingers and someone grabbed me from behind. At the same time, Mya was pulled from my arms.
Then everything went black.
