Chapter8: Gone

Michael's POV.

My head snapped up at the sound of something moving upstairs. The three of us were downstairs leaving only Mya upstairs. And it definitely sounded like more than one pair of footsteps.

"I'll be back." I mumbled. I took the stairs two at a time and ran to my bedroom. Something wasn't right.

The door was wide open and a window was open. I never left windows open.

I went to the bathroom and saw there was water in the tub. But no Mya. She wasn't anywhere on the second floor. I checked every room in the house and the were all empty.

Someone had to have taken her.

I slammed my fists into the wall beside the front door, leaving dents in the drywall. How the hell was I supposed to find out who took her? There were millions of vampires in the world now. It'd be impossible to find out who took her.

"You're pissed. What's up?" Eddie asked, standing at the top of the basement steps.

"Someone took Mya."

"Who was it?"

I threw my hands up, my anger getting the best of me. "I don't know! You think I'd be standing here if I did?"

Eddie sighed. "Maybe whoever did it left something. We could track their scent or something."

Without saying a word, I went back to the bedroom and looked around for something, anything, that would tell me where Mya could have gone.

"Dude, come here." Eddie said from the bathroom.

I walked in and saw him holding something in his hand. On further inspection, I saw it was a wallet.

"Apparently, our president has been taking inventory." He said, opening it to show the ID inside.

I growled and my hands balled into fists. How the hell was I going to get her back now?

"We'll get her back. Come on." Eddie said, putting a hand on my shoulder. When he saw the look on my face, his hand fell. "Alright, let's just go then."

"Make sure that girl is locked up. I don't want anyone or anything getting to her while we're gone."

He nodded and went for the basement.

I walked to the dining room and pulled open the china cabinet. Inside were guns and other vampire weapons. I grabbed Mya's backpack of silver weapons and loaded my own into it.

"You know he could kill us with those." Eddie said, watching me from the doorway.

"It's better than nothing. And if he doesn't want our money, we can bribe him with these."

"You really think that'll work?"

I sighed. I wanted it to. I was praying it would, even though I wasn't religious. But I needed something to keep me going. Something that would let me know it wasn't a lost cause, trying to get Mya back.

"I guess we'll die trying. Better get it over with fast."

Living on the opposite side of the United States from the capital was a pain. Even traveling on foot would take at least a day of moving. That was a lot of time that Mya could be hurt. Or dead.

I wasn't sure what I'd do if she were dead.

Eddie stopped moving and scanned the area in front of us. "Do you smell that?"

I slowed to a slow walk and sniffed. There was a heavy scent of metal in the air. Then a girl screamed.

Eddie and I took off toward the noise and found a girl stumbling through the thick grass. Her shirt was torn, revealing cuts across her back. Her hair was messy and clumped together by mud. Her leg appeared to me broken and bleeding.

I moved toward her and stepped on a twig, making it crack. The girl jumped and immediately turned around, whimpering at the pain in her leg.

"P-please don't hurt me." She whispered, staring at both of us with wide, scared eyes. She was shaking. There was a bruise over her left eye and her nose was broke.

Eddie held his hands up in surrender and took a slow step forward. "Who did this to you?"

I rolled my eyes. Finding these human strays was rare. It was hard to believe a human could have hurt her. My bet was on a vampire.

"I-I don't know."

"Should we keep her?" I asked, already getting bored with her.

The girl's eyes bugged. "Keep me? Like a pet?"

"What? Did you think we'd treat you like a roommate or something?"

"I-"

"Mike, knock it off." Eddie said, glaring at me.

I rolled my eyes.

He walked closer to her and held his hand out to her. "We're gonna help you."

Tears filled her eyes but she nodded. When she started to walk, she fell, her broken leg giving out on her.

Eddie went to her, picking her up in his arms. She was crying now, her tears mixing with the blood on her face.

"What are you going to do?" I asked, hating that we were wasting time on the girl.

He lifted his upper lip, showing a fang. Either he wanted to bite her or he wanted to drain her. I wasn't sure which he meant.

I raised an eyebrow, letting him I was confused.

Instead, he took it as a questioning look, like I wasn't sure he'd stick to his plan. Without another word, he sunk his fangs into the girl's neck.

He didn't drink her blood.

The girl screamed and reached up to cover the bite with her hand. "Ow! Y-you said you wouldn't hurt me."

"I'm not." He said in a calm voice. We had started walking then, still heading towards the capital. I didn't want to take the girl with us, especially since Eddie just bit her. I had bigger problems to worry about.

"B-but you bit me." Her voice was so high pitched and whiny. I wasn't sure I'd have even drank her blood if I had the option to. I would've just killed her.

"It'll help you heal faster."

Her eyes said she trusted him. I wasn't sure if it was because he was 'helping' her or because he may have used some mind control on her.

"You sure you don't want to just head back? I can get Mya myself." I offered, really not wanting this girl with us.

"I can't leave you alone with him, Mike. He could kill you. He will if you try to take what's his."

I growled and narrowed my eyes to slits at him. "She. Is. Not. His."

Eddie glared right back at me, knowing where the conversation was headed. "She's not yours either."

"I claimed her. She's mine."

"You can say she's yours, claim her, do... all sorts of things. But in the end, there's always a vampire who wants humans more. And they'd do anything to get them."
