Chapter10-Afraid
Michael's POV.
"My throat still hurts and the sun is killing me."
"We can't give you any more blood." Eddie, after having bit the human we'd ran into, walked beside the new vampire, trying, again, to reassure her that she would be fine. "You can last a few days without some, anyway."
"But-"
I turned around and glared at her. She'd been complaining for the last few hours and I had a headache, something I couldn't get as a vampire. Somehow, she'd made that possible. "Shut. Up."
Her eyes widened before narrowing to slits. She stayed silent.
Eddie was the one to speak. "Go easy on her, would you? You probably were just as annoying as her as a newborn."
"No, I wasn't."
"What if Mya's like this?"
I ignored his comment and started moving. I didn't have time to deal with him or the girl or anything else, for that matter. I just wanted to get to Mya.
I grabbed the ski mask from my pocket and stuck it over my head and face just as the clearing opened. Eddie had done the same and was helping the girl into more sunlight-appropriate clothing. She was complaining about how unnecessary it all was. I was hoping she'd walk right into the sun and burn herself. She deserved it.
The GPS in my phone said we were just a few miles from the white house. Even though vampires took over and ruled the world, the buildings were still there, still the same. The GPS hadn't changed since we were in hiding. That was a good thing.
I sped behind buildings and sitting cars as fast as I could, knowing that Mya was just within my reach, just up ahead.
Eddie caught up to me, his hand holding the girl's. "What's the plan?"
I shrugged. "I don't have one."
"Dude, you need to think this through. If you just go barging in, he'll kill you right off the bat and Mya will be toast."
"I'm not going to barge in. I'm finding a window and climbing in. Then I'm snooping."
Eddie rolled his eyes. "You're impossible."
I almost snapped back at him but now wasn't the time. The white house was just a few yards away from us, staring at us mockingly. Inside, Mya was either screaming or crying or dead. I had to get in there. I had to get her back.
It took all of two seconds of Mya being gone for me to realize my feelings for her. Just knowing she wasn't with me was awful. Her attitude, her snippy comments toward me, her beautiful long hair was what had initially drawn me to her. But my behavior had made her distant, reserved, and she drew back into herself, growing shy and scared, something I hated myself for.
Then, as if an alarm had gone off in my head, something to the side of the building caught my attention. A figure was jumping out of a second floor window. Then another, one I immediately recognized as Mya.
Without telling Eddie or the girl what was going on, I took off in the direction Mya was at. Finally, finally, I was getting her back.
-
The trees around the fence of the yard were thick and made it easy to hide myself from the sunlight. I took the mask off and stuffed it back in my pocket.
I spotted Mya's hair, just as I had the first time I saw her, first before I saw any other part of her. She was wearing a white dress, very revealing, and nothing more. That didn't surprise me. Most vampires didn't dress their humans as it wasn't very important.
Her arms were around someone's neck, her face hidden from view. I noticed that the other person with her was a vampire. Though I was surprised to see he was barely covered from the sun. Didn't he realize he'd be burnt at the slightest ray of sunlight?
Before I could move faster and get to her, the girl with Eddie darted in front of me and pushed Mya right off the vampire's back, sending her onto her back on the ground. She grabbed Mya's small dress in her fists and pulled Mya toward her, ripping the dress in the process. She sunk her fangs into Mya's neck and started feeding carelessly, totally oblivious to the fact that too much would completely kill Mya.
Mya groaned and tears spilled down the sides of her face.
I growled and moved toward her. But Mya was faster. With shaking movements, Mya put her palms against the girl's chest and pushed her away with such force, the girl flew into a tree dozens of feet behind her. The tree dented where she hit. Burn marks appeared on the girl's chest in the shape of hands.
Before she could lunge for Mya again, I darted to Mya's side and got in the way, making it impossible for the girl to reach her now. Thankfully, Eddie was helping me by restraining her.
That's when I first saw it. The tattoo I had put on her was no longer there, just a burn mark. A scar now. On her chest, in big letters, was 'Alvarez' in blood and ink. She was claimed by someone else.
But I quickly moved my attention away when I noticed she was watching me. Her eyes were wide and her fear was clearly present. I could smell it on her.
She was afraid. Of me.
